China Developing Live-Action Mulan Feature Film

Mulan is going live-action? Really?! China Film Group and newcomer Xinhua Media Entertainment have partnered to develop a live-action version of the Chinese legend of Mulan. The budget is expected to be around $30 million, which is quite a bit for a Chinese production. It's already set to start shooting in China in the spring, but no details have been revealed yet surrounding any writer(s) or a director. And let's be clear - this is actually a live-action version of the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan that was what inspired Disney's 1998 animated film, and not an adaptation of Disney's actual version of the story.
First written as a poem in during the 6th century, the legend of Hua Mulan tells the story of a great Chinese heroine who joins an all-male army in order to fight in place of her elderly father. The Disney version of the film fared rather well, making over $300 million worldwide in 1998 and earning a 7.1 rating on IMDb. MoviePlus executive Christopher Brough explained that "they liked that we were taking a Hollywood approach to a classic Chinese story," referring to the co-financing deal that his company made with the Chinese companies. I never saw the Disney version, but this sounds like it could potentially be entertaining?

I'd watch it.
And, yes, I own the Disney version–not bad. Expecting something different from live-action, though.

I wonder what kind of rating they'll shoot for on this one…a G would bring them the same crowd Disney attracted, but an R would make it more epic and realistic.

I've heard of this rumor FOREVER AGO. Back in the olden days Michelle Yeoh was cast for Mulan (haha). Hopefully we'll see a fresh face. It would also be nice if the film was not Disney inspired.
