David Gordon Green Helming Freaks of the Heartland Adaptation
October 21, 2008
by Alex Billington
David Gordon Green will be venturing into small town horror next with an adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series Freaks of the Heartland. Green last directed Pineapple Express this year and Snow Angels before that, two great films that couldn't be more unlike each other. In my interview with Green in July, he mention that he's "working on a horror movie now" and this seems to be it. The Freaks of the Heartland series was written by Steve Niles, of 30 Days of Night previously, while the adaptation is being written by newcomer screenwriters Peter Sattler and Geoff Davey. Sounds like a fun little horror project to me.
"Under the weathered skies of America's heartland, and in the wounded hearts of every family in one tiny rural town, a terrible secret has been kept for too many years." This six-issue series, first published in 2004, follows Trevor Owens' attempts to protect his "monster" of a 6-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley's other "freaks" from their parents' intentions to get rid of them once and for all. Sounds like a very interesting concept and I'm considering picking up a copy the next time I'm at my local comic book shop. And I'll be curious to see if David Gordon Green will live up to the promise he made during my interview in July. "Just wait until [I make] one where I scare you until you poop your pants." Bring it on!

I personally thought 30 Days of Night was fun as hell! I look forward to hearing more on this in the future.

I'm curious, I love Steve Niles so I'd like to check out the comic, too.
