Worth Watching - Oct 25: Michelle Williams' Wendy and Lucy Trailer
October 25, 2008
by Alex Billington
This could be called Kelly Reichardt's follow-up to Old Joy, the beloved 2006 indie film. Wendy and Lucy follows Wendy (played by Michelle Williams) and her dog Lucy as they travel to Alaska for a summer job. Her life begins to fall apart once her car breaks down in Oregon. I'm reminded a lot of Into the Wild, but obviously with a much different story and different lead character, but similar experiences. This premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and went on to play in numerous other fests, but I never had the chance to catch it. In lieu of all the Hollywood trailers that have come out this week, I thought I'd share this milder one.
Our friend Kim Voynar over at Cinematical gave it a positive review at Cannes, saying "Reichardt frames the shots perfectly, drawing us into Wendy's story visually rather than with lots of talky, stage-play dialog" and that "Reichardt's remarkable gift for classically simple, deeply engaging storytelling" shines through. The film also has a strong 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, which shows that it has some supporters. Give it a shot!
Watch the trailer for Wendy and Lucy:
Wendy and Lucy is co-written and directed by Kelly Reichardt, of past indie gems River of Grass, Ode, and Old Joy. The screenplay was co-written by Reichardt and Jonathan Raymond from Old Joy as well. The film first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year and was eventually picked up by Oscilloscope Pictures for distribution. Wendy and Lucy is set for limited theatrical release on December 10th this year.

Caught this last weekend at a small fest and was devastated. This movie captures the essence of loneliness and despair. Brilliant.

#2 Max- you haven't seen her in "anything big"? There was this movie called Brokeback Mountain…maybe you've heard of it? She was nommed for an Oscar too.
This looks wonderful. And I'm from Oregon so I'd like to see where they filmed it.
