Zac Efron Headlining Footloose Revamp for Paramount
October 28, 2008
by Alex Billington
It looks like High School Musical isn't over yet! Zac Efron will star in a revival of Footloose to be directed by Hannah Montana and High School Musical director Kenny Ortega. Paramount is fast-tracking the project and has hired Nick and Norah director Peter Sollett to rewrite the 1984 film that starred Kevin Bacon. Those who are fans of the original production shouldn't be too worried - Paramount is making sure that this remake is aimed at older moviegoers rather than those that High School Musical caters to. Producer Dylan Sellers and Ortega have already put in 2 years of work into this musical.
Sollett will be adding a few new songs "that will complement some of the memorable original tunes." The original movie wasn't exactly a musical, but everyone is familiar with the song "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins and the feature was turned into a Broadway musical in 1998 anyway. Zac Efron's involvement in this will be quite extensive, including overseeing the script. If this turns out to be anything like Hairspray, which also starred Efron, then I'm in. I loved that film and wouldn't mind seeing Footloose get a similar revamp. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but the musical trend continues to strive in Hollywood.

I don't know Alex… I wasn't a huge fan of Hairspray the musical. It as okay. Zac Efron is dangerously close to becoming type cast if he isn't already. Honestly, I don't think Footloose even needs a revamp. Also, if they wanted this to be for older audiences, I don't believe they should have gone with Efron, because now automatically the younger girls will be interested…

Footloose wasn't a musical. This is gonna suck. What's next…a musical version of The Goonies? Are any movies from the 80's safe from the current remake/reboot/rehash/bastardization that Hollywood is obsessed with?
High School Musical scares me.

I never saw the Broadway Footloose. Was it any good? I did enjoy the movie Hairspray, but I'm still not sold on this. Efron's a cute kid and all, I don't blame him for milking it for all he can.

So what do you mean when you say that Efron will be "overseeing the script"…he doesn't really seem like the writing type to me…more the teenage heartthrob, plus isn't he pretty young to be developing his own projects?
Sorry, I don't know much about Efron besides what I catch on the Disney Channel commercials every once in awhile.

WTF? A Footloose remake? What next, a Just One Of The Guys remake? Kevin Bacon just rolled over in his grave… Oh he's still alive?

I was skeptical when I heard about Zac Efron being in this but now hearing that Kenny Ortega is directing and that it's going the musical route is even more disappointing.

the footloose musical was actually really good.
i saw it in NY and my sisters theater group did a version for her high school that was pretty entertaining.
the story and songs mix incredibly well, and i think with efron as the lead it will be fine.

I think the Footloose story has been retold a million times since it first came out has it not?
They say our dancing is bad, our parents hate us, society hates us, but so what, wait ’til they see us dance! Doing cartwheels and backflips and moonwalks, that will change their minds and accept us…
Group hug.
