A Lesson in Reporting News Courtesy of Sam Mendes
November 7, 2008
Source: Empire
by Alex Billington
Remember that news from just a few days ago that said Sam Mendes was attached to direct an adaptation of Vertigo's Preacher comic series? Well it seems like Variety jumped the gun a bit on certain aspects of that news. Empire spoke with Mendes recently and he didn't seem too optimistic about it. "This is a typical Variety announcement," Mendes said. "'Mendes to direct Preacher' – I wish! Basically they should have written, 'Mendes in development with Preacher'. What I’m doing is, I've gotta find a script. I've just got to get it written." Wait - so there isn't even a script yet? Or even a writer? How can they even call this an official announcement?! "I'd love to make Preacher," Mendes admits. "But there's no script."
It was mentioned that Mendes was personally searching for a writer, so the news was fairly accurate. But with that hiccup out of the way, let's move on to the more important details. "It's brilliant, it's an incredible twisted vision," Mendes said of the comic. So how much work do they need to do? "There's so much of it you couldn't possibly fit it all into one movie. It's just about what you keep and what you leave out, and how you structure the story." At least he's very respectful to the source. For those who need a recap on what Preacher is all about, head back over to the original story. For now, we thank Mr. Mendes for providing us with that valuable lesson on why Variety should be a bit more clear in the future.

No script? False. I wrote a Preacher treatment months ago, and I've been writing the script for the past 2 months. Anyone know Sam Mendes' agent or manager?
