Warner Brothers Picks Up Tales From the Gangster Squad
November 7, 2008
by Alex Billington
Warner Brothers has acquired the rights to the LA Times' editorial series "Tales From the Gangster Squad" about a LAPD squad put together in the 1940s to combat the mafia. Former exec Dan Lin will produce and is currently searching for screenwriters. The series, written by columnist Paul Lieberman, just concluded this past weekend with photos, video, and complete write-ups found in a section on their site titled Complete L.A. Noir. The story of the Gangster Squad sounds pretty fascinating and reminds me of The Untouchables, another story about a police squad put together to fight the mafia in Chicago.
In 1946, in a chaotic and corrupt Los Angeles, gangsters brazenly engaged in shootouts and drive-by shootings. The LAPD put together the Gangster Squad with an "anything goes approach" to keep the East Coast Mafia out of the city. For a while hardly anyone knew this existed until Lieberman was contacted by one of the members of the squad. He spent years interviewing hundreds of people involved to put together the editorial series. The root of the story focuses on the LAPD's obsession with taking down mobsters Bugsy Siegel and Mickey Cohen. Will definitely keep everyone updated on the status of the production.
