Sergei Bodrov Will Be Retelling The Adventures of Marco Polo
November 10, 2008
by Alex Billington
Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov (seen above), who directed the Oscar nominated historical film Mongol from last year, will next helm The Silk Road: The Adventures of Marco Polo. The epic film will chronicle the life of the controversial 13th-century Italian trader and explorer Marco Polo. Bodrov will both write and direct the film with Hollywood Gang's Gianni Nunnari (300) and Endgame's James D. Stern (The Brothers Bloom) producing. "Sergei is a great filmmaker and the perfect candidate to breathe life into a story about a man whose determination and courage resonates with audiences around the world."
Unfortunately I missed out on seeing Mongol, even though I heard some good things from the few that did see it. This may be an odd way to look at this news, but the fact that Bodrov's got two fairly big name producers on board this project means that it's not another indie film. I didn't know that Marco Polo had such an exciting history. The story in the film will be told through the eyes of Polo's prison mate, Rustichello da Pisa. Polo was captured during the war between Venice and Genoa in 1298 and had da Pisa record the accounts of his travels in the unknown parts of China which was later published as Il Milione.

I went to the new york premiere of mongol and my friends father was one of the producers and i got to talk to Sergei a little bit and he seems very capable of retelling any tale including the two sequels to mongol.

Mongol is available on Netflix. It's an awesome movie. I hope the trilogy isn't going to be put off for the Marco Polo film, I'm really looking forward to the next two if it's going to be made.
