Vera Farmiga Also Joins Jason Reitman's Up in the Air
November 24, 2008
by Alex Billington
A few days ago we announced that Anna Kendrick was joining Jason Reitman's Up in the Air. Now we learn that Vera Farmiga has also joined as the female lead, meaning Kendrick's role must not be as big as we first thought. Farmiga will play a businesswoman and the romantic interest in the film opposite George Clooney. Shooting starts in February in St. Louis, Miami and Las Vegas. Reitman adapted the screenplay from Walter Kirn's novel of the same name about a "career transition counselor" (meaning professional firer) whose only joy in life comes from the prospect of notching his millionth frequent-flyer mile.
I think Farmiga is a strong up-and-coming actress, but I get the feeling she's better suited for foreign characters than American ones. Here's the thing - no one really knows what this is actually about beyond the basic idea. I picked up the book a few months ago but didn't get too far into it. And now I don't exactly know how either Anna Kendrick or Vera Farmiga's roles play into the story. If Farmiga is the romantic interest and, according to Reitman, doesn't change the life of Clooney's character, then what does she end up doing and who is Kendrick playing anyway? I'm not sleeping tonight until I read Up in the Air cover to cover.
