Must Watch: Brian Goodman's What Doesn't Kill You Trailer
November 26, 2008

by Alex Billington
Yari has debuted the trailer for Brian Goodman's What Doesn't Kill You over at the LA Times. At this point, we can almost classify South Boston films as their own genre. What Doesn't Kill You is the latest, based on the real life of writer/director Brian Goodman. In the film, Mark Ruffalo and Ethan Hawke star as two South Boston kids who grew up as street thugs that eventually realize it's either prison or family. I'm really conflicted with What Doesn't Kill You - it has some great aspects to it, but it's also a very flawed film. And this trailer doesn't help either, it just makes it look like a great film. What do you think?
If you're curious to know more about this, I highly suggest you read my review from Toronto. That beautiful score and the performances from Ruffalo and Hawke, that they highlight so well in this trailer, are the strongest aspects of the film - but the editing and the story are the weakest. I was hoping that Goodman would go back into the editing room for a while before releasing this, but that doesn't look to be the case.
Watch the trailer for What Doesn't Kill You:
What Doesn't Kill You is both co-written and directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Brian Goodman. The screenplay was written by Goodman, screenwriter Paul T. Murray (The Black Rose, Cruel World), and fellow Bostonian Donnie Wahlberg. The story is based on the real life experiences of Brian Goodman. Yari Film Group will premiere What Doesn't Kill You in limited theaters starting on December 12th this year.

Looks fantastic. The lead actor, and the vibe of the movie, actually made me think of "On the Waterfront"…call me crazy if you want… *shrug*

OoOOOOOk. What did Ethan Hawke get an oscar nomination for again??? Oh yeah, that's right, Training Day. Ugh! Ok, I am the type that actually is tough to move, usually stories based on real life events do it for me but this looks really unappealing—and I'm being nice here…dang.

I think I might have seen this movie 100 times before, or some other heap of shit, I can't tell. Ooh we're all Irish (kind of), oooh we're all poor, oooh let's rob stuff, wow look how attractive my wife is, You think I'll make it? Off course I will, or they could do the ironic version where I get shot, who cares, seen it, seen it.
Can't wait for this on cable tv.

I'm just glad that's not Amanda Peet in it like I initially thought it was. In fact, I may just see it because of that.
