Fox is Actually Considering Another Planet of the Apes?

About a month back we brought you some details on a Planet of the Apes prequel titled Genesis: Apes. Apparently the script, written by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (of The Relic), had been floating around Fox for quite a while. It actually sounded like an interesting story that I would've supported if it ever got made. Well, CHUD has come through again with another update, this time from Fox CEO Tom Rothman. The Fox Movie Channel is showing all five Planet of the Apes movies (presumably as a promo for the new box set) and at the end of the original Planet of the Apes, Rothman himself chimed in with an exciting update.
"We are very close at Fox on a new Apes script - this one a kind of prequel story before the first story, with a return to the social thematics that mark the first one, but with an entirely contemporary setting - Earth 2009." Sounds a lot like that Genesis: Apes script, which was set in modern day. And the fact that Rothman specifically mentions 2009 makes me wonder if they're trying to push this into production next year. With a dismal summer this year, Fox has been going back to trusted franchises for future projects - and I imagine Planet of the Apes is one of them. Stay tuned - because we might see some official announcements soon!

you can't put meet the spartans into that group. that movie was designed to BE bad. The others were trying to be serious and came out just bad.

Is this the prequel story to the one with the actor Mark Whalberg in it ??… It would be great if they do a sequel instead of a prequel. I eagerly want to know what happened to Mark Whalberg since they day i watched that movie.. It was pretty much explained even though they didn't show, how those apes came to be talking in the previous movie…

After watching the first 3 apes films on the Fox movie channel the other day I really believe the art of movie making was much better during that period than today. Why- because the directors then were far superior storytellers who understood that the camera was used to tell that story and not be part of it. The fact that todays audience accepts the ridiculous shaky cam and quick editing cuts as good movie making is sad. Im not a fan of doing any Planet of the Apes remakes and sort of hope this project never sees the light of day!

Just say no. Are they that short on ideas? How about getting rid of a lot of the hot air writers above the glass ceiling please. I know there is some great writing talent out there.

I would like a a series or miniseries that actually comes close to what the original book portrays and that they unsuccessfully tried to convey in 2001 remake which was entertaining but simply fell off the mark.
I'd barf if they go with the 1960's movie storyline first of all because we now know a lot of things about apes we did not know back then, back then people envisioned Gorillas as savage and Chimps as civilized when the opposite is true.Chimps in fact are quite vicious and even cannibalistic sometimes.
The only thing Burton got right from the book it was the fact that it was set in another planet and not Earth millions of years in the future.
But I guess doing something right is too much to ask from Hollywood this days…
