Worth Watching - Nov 29: Lukas Moodysson's Mammoth Trailer
November 29, 2008

No, this isn't an unofficial remake of 10,000 B.C., it's Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson's latest feature film. Mammoth is an English language drama starring Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal as a married couple. Similar to Alejandro González Iñárritu's Babel, Mammoth explores the connection between three people in three different places. Tom (Bernal) heads on a business trip to Thailand where he tries to radically change his life; Allison (Williams), his wife, lives in New York and struggles to spend time with their daughter and deal with their live-in Filipino maid; and lastly, their maid's family and her two kids struggle with her absence in the Philippines. Our friend Eric at IONCINEMA.com predicted that this would premiere at Sundance in January. After this trailer, I hope it does, because I really want to check it out.
Watch the trailer for Lukas Moodysson's Mammoth:
Mammoth is both written and directed by Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson of Together, A Hole in My Heart, and Container previously. With fellow Swedish director Tomas Alfredson's vampire film Let the Right One In being heralded as one of the best films of the year, it would be great to see more unknown Swedish directors get some attention as well. Mammoth is set to debut in Sweden and other European countries early next year, but doesn't have a US distributor just yet. We're crossing our fingers and hoping that Mammoth will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January - stay tuned.

Michelle Williams always reminds me of Oksana Akinshina, and she was in Moodysson´s Lilya 4-Ever.

I'm actually happy that it presents the Filipino problem of Overseas Filipino Workers. A shame that none from our own country can show it with a serious perspective. Instead, most have been comedies about the situation.
I am eager to watch this movie

Can't wait for this… lukas moodysson's films always blow me away. Together, Fucking Amal, and most importantly Lilja 4-ever are all some of the best films I've ever seen… he has an amazing touch in making films that are incredibly realistic but still very compelling stories, and one of the best casters, usually with unknown children who blow you away with their acting skills. This marks a different path for him in many ways - english language, well known actors, and settings that span the earth rather than confined to one place like his other works. So I am excited to see how it is… the trailer pulls me in in some ways but I'm not sure…. still I trust him 100% to make a great film, and know I love it.
gael garcia bernal is one of my favorite actors as well so this looks to be great.
