All we've seen this holiday weekend is nothing but first look photo debuts and today we have yet another. Back in April we wrote about a film called Agora where filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar wanted to allow "the audience to see, feel and smell a remote civilization as if it were as real as today." The civilization in question - the Egyptians during the 4th century AD. In the film, Rachel Weisz stars as astrologer and philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria who fights to save the collected wisdom of the ancient world. Courtesy of Fotogramas.es (via Twitch), we've got our first look at Rachel Weisz and Amenábar working on set.
Below you'll see Alejandro Amenábar, of Open Your Eyes, The Others, and The Sea Inside, directing Weisz on the elaborate set. In the previous article, we checked out a few photos of the enormous set that was being built Malta. It looks like Amenábar is sparing no expense making this as epic as possible.
Agora is an English language film described as a historical drama set in Roman Egypt. The film concerns a slave who turns to the rising tide of Christianity in the hopes of pursuing freedom while also falling in love with his master, the famous female philosophy professor and atheist Hypatia of Alexandria. In addition to Weisz, Max Minghella stars as her slave Davus, and Oscar Isaac, Rupert Evans, and Michael Lonsdale also appear. Production wrapped in Malta back in June and the film is currently in post-production, aiming for a December 18th, 2009 release from Focus Features. We'll bring you more updates as we come across them.

Such a long wait for a promising film. Sounds like the studio is trying to shoot for next year's Oscars. I love Rachel Weisz as much as the next giddy fanboy, but I just hope this doesn't get lost along with the release James Cameron's Avatar which is also aiming for December 2009, if I can recall.

Ah, this film appears to showcase three of my favorite ancient civilisations, namely the Greeks, the Romans and the Egyptians. Really looking forward to it.
