Hilary Swank Joins Hammer's Indie Thriller The Resident
December 4, 2008
by Kevin Powers
Plying her craft to another thriller beyond 2007's abysmal The Reaping, Hilary Swank is set to star in The Resident as a doctor who moves into a Brooklyn loft, made uneasy by the fact that her landlord is a stalker. Is he stalking Swank's character? Other residents? And how? We don't any of this just yet as the Variety article is pretty scarce of plot particulars. We do know that the film will mark the directorial debut for Finnish music video and TV director Antti J. Jokinen, and the film, which starts shooting in May, was co-written by Robert Orr (the upcoming Underworld installment) and Erin Cressida Wilson (Secretary).
The relaunched studio behind Resident, Hammer Films, has a couple of recent, small thrillers under its belt, Beyond the Rave and The Wake Wood. All told, Swank's new digs seem like a pretty small-time affair. I'm really curious why she signed on, considering she seems more at home in tight dramas, such as Million Dollar Baby, Black Dahlia and the upcoming Amelia Earhart biopic, Amelia. Although, one could say her choice is a little suspect when you look back at The Core and The Reaping. Despite the broader films, however, I do often enjoy Swank in most anything. So seeing her play more in the darker territories is definitely welcome. And just how dark Resident may be is something we'll keep an eye on as more news develops.
