Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards for 2008

One might assume that critics in Los Angeles would be the hardest to please. While that may be the case, either they simply didn't love some of the other heavy hitters or they just loved a few other films so much more, because the Los Angeles Film Critics Assocation year end awards feature Wall-E and The Dark Knight as the big winners. I also feel somewhat of an obligation, now being a Los Angeles local myself, to run this since so many of these critics are the same ones that I go to screenings with. Not that I agree with them, but I think they have a good presence and their choices aren't all that bad. Take a look!
Best Picture: Wall-E
Runner-up: The Dark Knight
Best Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Runner-up: Christopher Nolan, The Dark Knight
Best Actor: Sean Penn, Milk
Runner-up: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

I'm actually quite satisfied by these choices, a lot of them are exactly what I'd probably vote for too, even A.R. Rahman's soundtrack from Slumdog Millionaire and Sean Penn in Milk over others for Best Actor. Thanks to best awards season website Awards Daily for announcing these winners today. Hmm…I wonder if the Dark Knight is going to be this year's Shawshank Redemption, a movie that is nominated for a ton of Oscars and ends up winning none, but is everyone's second choice in every category. Except for Heath Ledger, and that's probably only because he died.

Aaron Eckhart will win best supporting role. he had the most outstanding performance in the dark knight.

i don't even like his acting as much in other films, but in the Dark Knight I believe that no one beat Ledgers performance.
why don't people think so?
look at him! watch his gestures and facial reactions, what film beat that?
no one else went that far this year.
and I honestly don't care that he died. it sucks for his family, for sure.
but it doesn't affect me in the slightest.

Darrin: I must say you're dreaming if you think Eckhart will win. Although his performance was remarkably strong in the film, all the press and hype went to Heath Ledger, and there are no "For Your Consideration" ads being run for Eckhart (not sure if there are for Ledger, although I would assume so). If anyone wins Best Supporting from The Dark Knight it will undoubtedly be Ledger.

I loved Wall-E but please, the Dark Knight is clearly the greatest picture of the year and the fact that another film beats in all these other critics award ceremonies speaks of nothing more than rebellious pretentiousness and sheer stupidity on the part of those voters. The Dark Knight is a visual and intellectual master work similar to no other film in that genre ever. It is going to be a classic and a film owned by many on dvd or blue ray for a reason. It's that damned good and that memorable. It is a vital film which has heightened the bar for an entire movie genre and should be awarded accordingly. And please, no performance in the past few years compares to Ledgers. A film classic to be savored.

Wonderful choice, Wall-e is such a clever and moving picture. Not to mention the heart they did put in making it. Well deserved.
