Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom Delayed Until Summer
December 11, 2008
by Alex Billington
Unlike the news that Universal was shifting the release date of Fast & Furious, this is good news! Summit Entertainment has announced that they are delaying the release of Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom until May 15th next summer. Summit pushed the release from January due to an apparent "glut of similar upscale features in the January marketplace" and the immense positive buzz that the film has been gaining. "We knew from our early tests and from enthusiastic festival reception that this film needed a home when audiences could discover it," said Summit's President of Domestic Distribution Richie Fay. Due yourself a favor and mark down the new release date in your calendar now, because I frickin' love this movie!
To be frank, I think Summit made this decision for a few reasons. The Brothers Bloom does have a lot of positive buzz and now they're finally very confident in it. Now that they're bank account has an extra $141 million in it, I think they've decided to put it into the summer timeslot so they could focus more time on making it a bigger hit and dedicate more money to a bigger and better marketing campaign. In essence, this is a great news for one of my favorite movies of this year. I've seen it twice and the more I think about it, the more I absolutely adore this movie completely. Again, as a reminder, The Brothers Bloom now hits limited theaters on May 15th, 2009, and an expands into a wide release on May 29th, 2009.

YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!
First I couldn't see it at the Toronto Film Festival, now I have to wait until May!
Argh!!!

Also, IMDb had listed it as opening December 19, which is why I felt so annoyed when I read it's moving to May (i.e. looking forward to seeing it next week).

I kept thinking I had already missed.

I really think this is a bad release. Mid/late May with all of the blockbusters, I would have picked February or March. If in the summer they should have made it in late June-August, because school is out then and movies have better playability on the weekdays compared to May when it is still just the weekends.

Caught this at TIFF and it's the best thing I've seen this year, so I'm pretty disappointed at having to wait another six months to see it again.
