Magnolia Debuts James Gray's Two Lovers Trailer
December 29, 2008

Back in October, Joaquin Phoenix said that he was supposedly leaving acting to pursue a career in music. The last film that he had completed was James Gray's Two Lovers. Magnolia Pictures has debuted the trailer for Two Lovers today on Hulu (gotta love that site). The film is a Brooklyn-set romantic drama about a bachelor (Joaquin Phoenix) torn between the family friend his parents wish he would marry (Vinessa Shaw) and his beautiful but volatile new neighbor (Gwyneth Paltrow). This looks like a solid independent drama that would fit well at a film festival, but doesn't seem like anything too memorable.
Jeffrey Wells says that Two Lovers "is a very decent…no, better-than-decent blue-collar drama from director-writer James Gray. It plays in the vein of Paddy Chayefsky's Marty, and has very fine performances from the entire cast." I haven't heard much else about, which could mean both good or bad things.
Watch the trailer for James Gray's Two Lovers:
Two Lovers is both written and directed by James Gray, the writer/director of Little Odessa, The Yards, and We Own the Night previously. The screenplay was also co-written by Ric Menello, of Tougher Than Leather and Drop Dead Rock previously. This film actually first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and also eventually played at the London Film Festival and AFI Fest. Magnolia Pictures will be debuting James Gray's Two Lovers in limited theaters starting on February 13th early next year.

You may be the only one still taking Phoenix's "retirement" seriously.
It's pretty much accepted by now that the whole thing is a hoax. Casey Affleck is said to be making a mockumentary, and recently shot Phoenix rapping in a club.

Are you kidding me ? That is no news… "Two lovers" has been released here in France in november, so I guess you could have found a lot of trailers 3 months ago or more… On this page, you have some trailers and bits (the videos are in the section named "15 vidéos disponibles" and the videos in english are those with "anglais sous-titré" under them) : http://www.allocine.fr/film/fichefilm_gen_cfilm=130773.html

The basic plot feels like it's been done before, but the details make it feel like something I've never seen before, and I want to see the whole thing! It does seem a bit unexciting, though, Maybe if there was some dark comedy in it….
