Howard Stern Reviving the Rock 'n' Roll High School

Howard Stern and producing partner Larry Levinson are planning a remake of the 1979 classic Rock 'n' Roll High School. The script is actually being written by Bill from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, aka in real life as Alex Winter, who has gone on to write and direct in addition to acting. Stern and Levinson are also remaking Porky's, with both films being personal favorites of Stern's. No director has been attached yet, but Winter explains "I've now done so much stuff in music videos, and the Napster movie, that the chance to bridge music and comedy was something that intrigued me. This movie seemed so ripe for a remake." Really? Ripe for a remake? Maybe after Paramount announced School of Rock 2!

The original 1979 comedy was directed by Allan Arkush and starred P.J. Soles, Vincent Van Patten, Clint Howard, and Dey Young. The film is about a group of rebellious students who, with the help of punk rock band the Ramones, thwart a repressive, rock-music-hating principal. Maybe it's because I'm not a child of the 70's, but I'd rather watch School of Rock countless times over than see Rock 'n' Roll High School remade! I know these two movies don't necessarily have anything in common, but when it comes to movies about students and rock music, there are only a few good movies that come to mind: Detroit Rock City, School of Rock, and, of course, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Maybe I'm just being a stickler about it, but I'm just not interested in this remake in the least. Someone please prove me wrong and show me that Rock 'n' Roll High School is indeed a classic!

I wouldn't say it's a classic. But, to those who love the movie (like myself) it is a wonderfully dumb, cheesy comedy... But, a remake is not needed. Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee Ramone are dead. If you can't have the Ramones in this movie, then it doesn't need to exsist. The only reason I enjoy Rock 'N' Roll High School is because of the Ramones. Again, with the remakes! HEY, HOLLYWOOD! LET'S GET SOME ORGINAL IDEAS!

Lol Alex, I had no idea Rock n Roll high School is deemed a Classic..... Looks like another remake.... Where have all the original story ideas gone.?

Rock N' Roll High School without The Ramones is 150% fucking pointless. Who are they going to use for the band? Fuckin' Fall Out Boy? Stern should know better.

Keep in mind, folks, that Alex Winter also wrote and starred in the show "the Idiot Box" which was often completely off its rocker and totally, hilariously strange. I'd love to see what else he's got up his sleeve - b/c it's not as if Keanu Reeves was the draw in Bill & Ted's I or II. I agree with tom that it'll be hard to picture Rock & Roll H.S. without the Ramones - but if Howard's getting behind it, I certainly hope it doesn't end up being Fall Out Ploy. He's got better taste than that, and was a close friend of Joey Ramone's, so I'd only hope that he'd get a band that would do Ramone's songs , or even a series of bands! Not to mention, Ron Howard's younger brother, the freakiest looking human alive - as the principal. Any remake of this would be far from winning Oscars, but I'd be willing to bet would be an edgier film than ANY kid friendly "School of Rock".

anyone ever see Freaked by Alex Winter? Hilarious movie, but if he wants a movie, why doesn't he write something of his own! This easy accessibility to remake movies by studious is really warped people's minds. Does anyone want to create anything new anymore, or have the good filmmakers just given up and said, eh, I'll just remake a movie that I and everyone loves. Morons! Leave Porky's and this movie alone, and like the other person said, without the Ramones, it's completely diminishing the point.

Man, I totally forgot about Idiot Box. I used to love that show!

any band or bands they get to "star" in this movie will suckass compared to the ramones! hell it was THIER movie after all. completely pointless to remake this and most other movies except for the fact that hollywood and it's writers have run out of original ideas!

Tom, #3, is absolutely right: "Rock N' Roll High School without The Ramones is 150% fucking pointless." Stern should certainly know better.

Didn't they already kinda do that with 'Rock n' Roll High School Forever' in the 80's? With Corey Feldman? 'This no my pee!'

  • Tim "Cloverfield"
    Riff Randall.......Nuff said Alex!

I loved the original. although it was dumb, it was a funny movie and had the ramones in it. can't imagine how they could pick any modern band for the remake. not too stoked about this idea. they might as well not call it rock n roll high school
  • Kathy
You can't have the movie without the Ramones! Did anyone see RnR High School 2? Does anyone remember it? There was no need for it.
  • Leroy Faster
would be ok with this IF AND ONLY IF they get the black lips for this. but either way, this fuckery must be stopped!

I can't imagine how the movie will become into if it without the Ramones. And Tom,"Rock N' Roll High School without The Ramones is 150% fucking pointless."? Really?
