Karyn Kusama to Direct Diablo Cody's Script Jennifer's Body
Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody's (middle, above) next major script is a horror comedy called Jennifer's Body that is being produced by Fox Atomic. Ever since we mentioned last October, it was confirmed that Megan Fox (right, above) was set to star as the lead, Jennifer, but no director had been chosen. Now, producer Jason Reitman (of Juno fame) and his partner Dan Dubiecki have chosen Karyn Kusama (left, above), of Girlfight and Aeon Flux previously, to direct the film. To be honest, it sounds like a lot of good things are coming together on this, but I'm just not sure if Fox Atomic is going to actually pull off a good movie.
In the film, Megan Fox plays a cheerleader in a sleepy Minnesota town. Described as a Heathers-type dark comedy, it tells the story of a seemingly-perfect cheerleader whose life is thrown into disarray when she gets possessed by a demon, begins eating boys in her small Minnesota town, then faces off against her best friend and the Satan-worshipping band that made her evil. Via an interview at MTV, Diablo Cody describes more of the inspiration behind the film.
"I think the interesting thing about adolescence is it's a time when your emotions are totally heightened. There's so much potential for comedy, tragedy, melodrama, horror, whatever."
"It's a lot darker [than 'Juno'], and it also has comedic elements. Horror is my favorite genre - and like Juno, I like horror movies."
Shooting will begin early next March. A release date hasn't been set, but it sounds like we can expect this sometime around the end of the year or early 2009. I'm not really sure if putting Karyn Kusama in the director's seat is a good idea, but we'll see how well she does. At least it will be an entertaining film, but it's definitely not going to get as much critical acclaim as Juno, that's for sure.
