The Pixar Story

I'm breaking our theatrical-only policy today to bring you the news that The Pixar Story documentary is now available on iTunes. For a mere $14.99 (it's worth it) you can download and watch one of the best documentaries you'll see all year. This fascinating film from Leslie Iwerks looks at the first years of Pixar Animation Studios - from the success of Toy Story and Pixar's promotion of talented people, to the building of its East Bay campus, the company's relationship with Disney, and its remarkable initial string of eight hits. If you are remotely a Pixar fan or just love their movies, this is unquestionably a must watch!

Initially, The Pixar Story was released only on TV on the Starz movie channel, meaning those who didn't have the channel wouldn't be able to watch it at all. Thankfully I caught it at a friend's house back in April and enjoyed the hell out of it, as it delves deep into the origin story of Pixar like you've never seen before. If you already own Wall-E on DVD, I believe this documentary is on there somewhere (I haven't confirmed it myself). Otherwise, do yourself a big favor, and go download this documentary! Thanks to our friends at Upcoming Pixar for first pointing this out. Here's the direct iTunes link for The Pixar Story.

The enlightening adventure John Lasseter takes is quite something. It is a real life tale of how just an ordinary, yet passionate, guy made something for himself. What kills me most about this story is his time spent at the studio when he started working on 3D animation and slept under his desk or out in his car for weeks on end while Steve Jobs was loosing one million a year supporting him. He deserves every penny, award, compliment, and pat-on-the-back he gets. He’s earned it all and gave us works of art and more talented animators that will entertain us and our children’s children for ever. Take the time to watch this great documentary, you will not regret it. And yes Alex, it is on Wall-E’s second disc.

    They have 9 consecutive hits if you include every feature they've made. Which you should because they all made a ton of money. Wall-E - $223,749,872 Ratatouille - $206,445,654 Cars - $244,082,982 The Incredibles - $261,441,092 Finding Nemo - $339,714,978 Monsters, Inc. - $255,873,250 Toy Story 2 - $245,852,179 A Bug's Life - $162,798,565 Toy Story - $191,796,233

Toy Story 191,796,233 sorry. And of course, this is without Home Video or Merchandising which adds nearly an extra 150 mil to each, more for the bigger classics.

It is a terrific documentary, I saw it on Starz a few months ago. I will definitely be picking up the Wall-E dvd now. A great movie and a great doc for the price of one!

I saw this movie when it premiered at Comic-Con (slightly drunk, not gonna lie), and it was fantastic. I especially geeked out at the end seeing John Lasseter driving the Congo Queen at the kickoff of Disneyland's 50th anniversary; I'd heard stories about that day, but actually seeing it was really cool. I'm going to run over to Netflix to watch it again.

Would be great to hear Pixar trash Disney for the treatment they got at the hands of Michael Eisner - but that probably won't be in it.

Or pay 9$ for Netflix and watch it on Instant Watch.
