Official Guide to the Summer of 2008

As of this moment, this upcoming summer (kicking off on May 2nd with Iron Man) looks quite promising. There aren't as many sequels as 2007, which is good (and also bad), but there are quite a few movies that look absolutely incredible - The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones 4, and Wall-E, to name a few. To kick off the new year and start some early buzz for the summer, we're publishing the Official Guide to the Summer of 2008 - in trailers. Below you will find a chronological listing of the best upcoming summer of 2008 movies and links to their respective trailers. It's a list you need to check out and save for reference when we start nearing the end of April, to help you decide what to see this summer.

Given how much of a letdown Spider-Man 3 was last summer, everyone has now become very weary about the big summer blockbusters. Although I can't say for absolute certain that any of these are going to be incredible, my feeling is that most of them could be pretty good. I will not deny that at this moment as I sit here writing this, I'm very excited for all of the movies this summer. It looks like it could be one of the best summers in years. There are a few movies that could truly be awesome, especially based on the trailers. We hope you enjoy this guide as much as we are excited to bring it to all of you.

Iron Man: because Spiderman3 , Daredevil, FF1, Punisher2.0 and Elektra didn't suck hard enough. Speed Racer: WTF? Seriously...nostalgia for anime.....F you Wachowski brothers... Prince Caspian: I give it 2.5 Mehs...at least my kids will sit quietly in awe though it. Sex In the City: "its a show about gay men as written by transexuals." VERY excited about some of these: Dark Knight - Nolan can do no wrong, and the Joker looks awesome in this version (will hopefully wipe away the bad memories left by Nicholson). And Bale is the best Batman ever in my opinion. Hellboy II - del Toro too can do no wrong. And Perlman kicks arse as Big Red! Indy IV - for anyone who remembers seeing Raiders at the cinema back in the 80s, this is more exciting than when Phantom Menace was on it's way (primarily because Lucas isn't directing!) Just hope Ford still has the chops to pull this off one more time. Iron Man - loved the trailer for this...really hoping they don't stuff it up. Wanted - Excellent cast. Hopefully won't be as unnecessarily convoluted as Night Watch. Wall-E - Actually really looking forward to this. Pixar have yet to make a bad movie in my opinion. Some were not as good as others, but judging on the trailer, this looks very interesting with perhaps the most spectacular CGI visuals ever. The rest I could take or leave. I'll see some on DVD (Mummy 3, Get Smart, maybe Kung-Fu Panda), but generally speaking, this is one of the more exciting summers in quite a while. As a final comment, though - it is troubling how many of these are either sequels, based on comic books or based on TV shows. It seems that Hollywood has zero interest in making original movies these days.

Iron Man - Possible to get me into the theatre for it. Speed Racer - LMFAO... This a joke? This looks incredibly stupid Narnia - Ummm... Will you buy my ticket for this? Bleh.. Indiana Jones - I'll wait for the DVD to come out and borrow it from someone that buys it. Forgetting Sarah Marshall - Who? Sex and the City - You couldn't pay me to sit through an episode so why a movie? Kung Fu Panda - No... and NO You Don't Mess with the Zohan - Remember when Sandler movies were funny... The Happening - I'd watch it in theatre. Looks like it'll be good. The Incredible Hulk - I haven't see the trailer or even heard it was being made so I dunno... Get Smart - Carell gets my attention in his movies and this one looks like it'll be a great comedy with him as well. Wanted - Looks like it'll be about as good as Mr. & Mrs. Smith... Which I liked. Wall-E - I'm really not sure what to think of this movie so I'll wait till the DVD comes out and my nephew gets it Hancock - Some of the wire work looks a bit off but maybe that's just the way they want it to look. The Mummy - I'll wait for the DVD unless I get bored and it's all I have left to see in the theatre. Brendan Fraser might do a good job on this. Pineapple Express - Still undecided if I will see this or not. Period. Looks like it'd be a great script but the actors that have the rolls? Just doesn't sit with me. You're call though!

I'll start chronologically: 1. Iron Man will most likely be pretty bad. Guy in suit of armor fights another guy in suit of armor. Sounds reeeeally boring. And the "witty" lines by Robert Downey Jr. are not really witty! 2. Speed Racer looks ridiculously stupid. No one over age 13 should be allowed to see this. 3. Narnia- haven't seen the first one. I don't have an opinion on this one yet. 4. Indiana Jones. Hopefully they'll be able to hide the fact that Harrison Ford is like 70 years old! If not, this might turn out to be silly. I'm hoping it's good though, I'm a huge fan of the franchise. 5. Sex & the City. This movie is going to tank. Bad. Who the hell do they think is gonna pay money to see this?!?! I mean, come on. Worst idea ever. 6. Kung Fu Panda. No idea what this is. No opinion. Sounds dumb though. I'll never see it. 7. Zohan. See above. 8. The Happening. I just watched the above trailer. This looks pretty damn good, I must say! 9. Hulk. This could have been alot better if they didn't have the big "monster" fight in it. The scenes with plain old Bruce Banner look way better than the Hulk scenes. Oh well what are you gonna do? It is called the "Hulk" right? hmmm I'm just gonna comment the movies I have actually heard of now. ~Dark Knight. Looks real good. If it's as good or better than the first Nolan Batman, then we definitely have a winner here. Looking forward to this! ~ X-Files 2. This movie is gonna tank at the box office also. They are about 10 years late with this one. Who the hell cares about the X-Files anymore? Besides crazy fanboys that should be focusing on getting that pizza I ordered for delivery to my house faster, no one will see this at the theater. ~The Mummy. Haven't seen or heard anything about this yet. But I love the ride at Universal Orlando!! LOL! The first two were entertaining, so it should be okay. This series just seems to be about having a good time at the show and not taking themselves so seriously. I'll see it. So it looks like my front-runners are The Dark Knight, The Happening, and (hopefully) Indiana Jones!

I'm really excited to watch Ironman this weekend, but I've been losing sleep over Grand Theft Auto. I have been seeing a movie trailer lately on adult swim, it is so familiar like i've played the game or read the book or something. looks to be a pirate movie. one line it "through shark infested waters" caught my attention straight away. You're reading the wrong article... and if there is any wirework on Hancock, I'd be amazed. I'm guessing the 2 mile whale toss was probably CGI. Have fun with your Mr & Mrs. Smith vhs, Ebert.

At least enough to understand that monster vs. monster and robot vs. robot (sorta) will always be a good idea. Add Robert Downey and Ed Norton to either and you can't really miss. You do know that Speed Racer is going to be a Wachowski brothers pic, right? I challenge you to watch any of those and not have fun.

I saw Speed Racer today and it is absolutely epic FUN. It's an incredible movie with a mindblowing color scheme and quick pace that actually ends up with a touching message. If you're dismissing this on some feeble misconception then you are really missing out. Think F-Zero GX meets animation with a very small touch of wacky happiness thrown in to keep you smiling. The car battles are completely over the top and non-stop throughout the movie. If you enjoy action, or racing, or purely brilliant cinematography you owe it to yourself to see this. I just realized I'm raving and sound like some kind of paid shrill. Truth is I'm just a movie fan like the rest of you and would hate to see this movie not make the money it deserves, and have the public miss out because they believe they are somehow too high minded for a Speed Racer film.

Iron Man was good. Indiana Jones was solid (worst of the 4 for sure). Im pretty excited for The Happening. But I think The Dark Knight will be the movie of the summer!

And his SNL Japanese game show host was the most racist thing ever to Japanese. And... well, you get my point. Mike Myers will parody anyone. Get over yourself. Now on to the movies. This site is pretty cool and it got me excited about a few movies coming out... 1) Dark Night I absolutely cannot wait for. I've heard Heath Ledger's performance is legendary. The last Batman movie was awesome, so I'm just counting down the days. 2) Get Smart, for some reason, I'm looking forward to as well. I remember that show from Nick at Night when I was a kid and thought it was funny then. 3) Ironman I've heard was great. Maybe I'll find a buddy who hasn't seen it yet to go with me since my wife has zero interest. 4) Zohan, blah. I don't know anyone who likes Adam Sandler anymore. Plus, that Arabic (?) accent is atrocious. I couldn't sit through a whole movie of that ridiculous accent. 5) The Happening could be good. I'll wait for reviews to come out before I spent $10. I've thought people have trashed M. Night Whateverhislastnameis' movies a little too hard. The Village was ok and Lady in the Water wasn't as bad to me as some people thought. I hope he makes a comeback with this one, although them making a big deal out of the fact that it's his first R-movie is stupid. Who cares? 6) Wall-E I've heard is supposed to be the best Pixar yet. I find that hard to believe. Nemo will be a tough act to top, but the creator spent 15 years on this project so I guess he thinks it's been worth it. 7) Indiana Jones, meh. Saw it, thought it was ok. My wife fell asleep. Shia LaBeouf is good though. The concept and storyline is what left me kind of flat. 8) Narnia was slightly better than ok. Not as good as the first movie, but didn't totally kill the suspense of waiting for the next installment which I think should be Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Another example of a bad accent that was distracting though. 9) Speed Racer. Not interested. 10) The Hulk... didn't we just have a Hulk that kinda sucked a few years back? I guess you throw Ed Norton in the mix and figure people will be interested, but that last version kind of killed it for me. 11) Mummy 3. I loved the first Mummy (then again, I was what, 15 when it came out?), tolerated the second one and almost vomited watching that horrible Scorpion King movie. Let's hope it returns to form. Rachel Weiss didn't sign on so I'm not getting my hopes up. 12) The Love Guru. Geez, looks pretty bad but I'm a Mike Myers fan so I'll give him a chance. If the reviews are awful though, I'll wait to Netflix that one. 13) Hancock. People on this site don't seem too excited about it. I'm a Will Smith fan so I'll probably go see it, but I understand the lack of excitement. If the character's not excited about being a superhero, why should we be? Smith seems to always be playing the guy who's the last one, the only one of his kind, the lone ranger kind of thing. (I Am Legend, Hancock, I Robot, etc.) 14) Hellboy II. Never saw the first and probably never will. Zero chance I see the second. 15) Sex and the City. I'll see Hellboy II and Speedracer before I saw this nonsensical garbage. 16) X-Files II. Did I fall into a time warp and all of a sudden it's popular again? Are people listening to the Macarena, wearing chain wallets and playing pogs again? What am I missing here? 17) Haven't heard much about Wanted. Cast looks good though. Might be interested, pending some RT reviews. 18) Step Brothers. I'm kinda getting tired of Will Ferrell and his merry band of bozos to be honest. I like Ferrell, but his movies and characters are all starting to look the same. 19) Tropic Thunder. I'm in the same boat with Ben Stiller as I am with Will Ferrell, but the proposition of Downey Jr. and Jack Black in the same movie with him makes me very curious. I might break down and see it. Plus, it looks like a Rambo parody and anything that makes fun of Rambo I'm down with. 20) Kung Fu Panda. Looks stupid, childish and ridiculous. Sign me up. Plus, my neices will probably love it.

Spider-man 3 wasn't bad. It could have been better, but it wasn't the huge let-down some say and certainly not the reason that any intelligent person is wary of big summer movies. The blame for THAT lies squarely on hack directors like Michael Bay (Transformers, Pearl Harbor), Cohen (upcoming Mummy 3, xXx), Devlin & Emmerich (ID4, Godzilla), etc. and producers like Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Murphy. If the average moviegoer was a little more familiar with the creative people that work on good films and the hacks that give Hollywood a bad name there'd be no reason to be wary because the big terrible movies are always made by the same talentless people. FU Michael Bay.

Not picking a fight here, just want to know if anyone who predicted the success of The Love Guru would like to retract their statement now. I didn't see it; but the reviews were awful and it absolutely tanked at the box office. Indy 4 didn't tank, but maybe it should have... Iron Man was good... looking forward to the next one... The Hulk wasn't bad... way better than the first one, if they do another one I'll probably see it. 2nd Narnia... didn't go... waiting for DVD... didn't exactly love the first one. The Dark Knight was the best of the summer. I will buy it the day the disc is released. It was an o.k. crop of summer movies; I'll have some Netflixing to do though as many of them could not convince me to spend ten bucks on the big screen experience.

Iron Man 2 is set to be released in 2010 round about the same time the A-Team is recruited and also the same time Tim Burton is reworking Lewis Carrol's cult classic Alice in Wonderland. Who would be the better bad girl? Scarlet Johanson as the Black Widow or Helena Bonan Carter as the Red Queen?

Truly an amazing summer for movies........certainly the best in my lifetime and one that will be remembered for a LONG time. My favorites: Iron Man - The start of another great comic book rendition. Indy IV - Extraordinarily special seeing Indy back on screen again. Really enjoyed this. The Incredible Hulk - Another piece of really solid comic book movie action. Hellboy II - Criminally underrated. Wild imagination, amazing visuals - it has heart, humor, emotion - much better than the 1st film (which I still liked). The Dark Knight - What else is there to be said here. Tropic Thunder - Great comedy. Brilliant performances from Downey Jr. and Cruise.

Truly, this was one of the most memorable summers of my life! I was only 13, and I thought I was all mature enough to see PG-13 movies without a grownup (LOL!) and I just remember it being a fun summer!
