Speed Racer

In one final desperate attempt to get everyone out of their seats and into theaters this weekend to see Speed Racer, Warner Brothers has released the entire uncut first seven minutes of the movie. Not only does this really introduce you to the colorful world that The Wachowski Brothers have dreamt up, but it really gives you just a small glimpse of the fun you'll have in theaters. I saw this for a third time last night at the midnight show with a bunch of friends and not a single one of them didn't like it. In fact, all of them absolutely loved this movie, even the ones who went in with low expectations. Do yourself a favor and go out and see Speed Racer this weekend - I really do believe most people will find it worthwhile entertainment.

You can also watch the footage from Speed Racer entirely in High Definition at Yahoo!

Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill.

Speed Racer is written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, directors of the Matrix trilogy and producers of V for Vendetta. The movie is based off of the Japanese manga and anime series originally known as Mach GoGoGo that first debuted in the 1960s. Speed Racer hits both regular and IMAX theaters this summer on May 9th - be there!

    It looks like fucking lazytown.

Looks like this film will be a favorite to win the Academy Award for special effects. That being said, I'll probably wait for the DVD on this one.

is it just me or has this movie really been hyped on this website or what? makes you wonder if the Brothers Warner are paying for all this hype on this website cause this really doesn't look that good unless you're a fourth grader. plus, it got pretty bad reviews over at rotten tomatoes and i usually use that website as my bible if im interested in seeing a movie. while the effects might be good, it does look rather kiddie to me and i seriously doubt there's much plot to this. why is this getting so much hype on this website?

MAN- my eyes hurt like a mothef*cker... Did that guy freeze to death? I like the little kid sequences... maybe if this were told in a linear manner I could get used to how weird that looked, before they TRAUMA-TIZED me w/ these racing scenes... I dunno... my head hurts, like those roller coasters that you stand in line in just b/c you haven't been on them yet. Really not worth the wait, but you stand waiting for them anyway. Can anyone say- IRON MAN???? :) (If Christina Ricci were in the entire movie, it'd be worth it, but I can't picture more than 5-10 mins of this... BRING ON THE RICCI!!!)
  • I'm brushing up on the episodes to get excited about the movie. you should too! check them out online: http://www.hulu.com/speed-racer?cmpid=emc&trackid=9
  • Wow I am blind from 7 minutes, Can you imagine a 70 foot screen 😛

This is purely a movie for 12 year old boys. Every review I've seen mentions that as one of the biggest flaws of the movie. But they KNEW that this was a movie for that audience. This is a highly targeted movie, and kids will eat this thing up. The bright side is that most parents won't utterly hate the movie - it's not a great film by any means, but it's still moderately fun to watch, even if you're not 12. I can see this being a big money-making flick, and that's pretty much all the studio wanted it to be. I commend the Brothers Wachowski for making a film that - visually - is so far out of the mainstream, and yet targeted directly at a mainstream market. Kind of a ballsy move on their part, and I'm surprised the studio let them do it.

Man I almost got sucked into the hype. Thanks Erica for that link, I just watched a bit of the cartoons and remembered how much I despised the cartoon as a child, and I guess I forgot until now. The first 7 minutes looks horrible to me. I think its just a style you like or don't. I really really hate movies that are like 1/2 real and 1/2 completely cratoonish. I truly even like Jim Henson puppets 10x more then this style. This looks like Cat in the Hat or one of those movies to me. I think it might be acceptable to my visual palate if the entire movie was CGI cast etc, but I just cant deal with it. I absolutely love the Matrix, and V, but this, man, its like I'm visually allergic to it or something. I'm sorry, if you like it I hope it rocks your face off, but I just cannot bring myself to enjoy this and I actually wanted to. Whew that was a close one.

Hey Squiggly the thing is I'm not sure it was really supposed to be directed at that audience only. The Bros are pretty weird fellas, I'm not sure what they were trying to do but I think once it all came together and people saw it almost complete they, at that moment realized, crap this is a kids movie. I don't ever remember people saying this was just for kids until very recently.
  • lol, i actually agree, richard. i can't imagine sitting through an entire movie like this (despite how fun the cartoons were). that's not to say I'm not going...i'll still have to check it out in person, but definitely not in the imax!
  • Definitely not for the seizure prone.

Looks like Pokémon's "Electric Soldier Porygon" has competition for the seizure-causing crown of entertainment :) Yikes.

I have to agree with Aaron, there's something very fishy about the amount of positive coverage FirstShowing is giving Speed Racer, especially given it seems to be reported as such a mediocre film elsewhere. I've scarcely seen them dedicate so many posts to one film. But, working in online PR myself, I should know that there's literally no opinion on the Internet left to trust.
  • Why is it "fishy"?? Have you not heard of the idea of an opinion? Or of subjective coverage? I LOVED the movie! Haven't you read my other articles? I've seen it 3 times now, loved it each and every time, and really want to help it out and prove to you that it's actually better than everyone is saying. Just because you're having trouble believing it's good because the majority of stuck-up critics are having a hard time enjoying it for what it is doesn't mean I'm not allowed to have my own opinion and LOVE a movie on my own! We don't follow the herd here on FirstShowing.net, we stand out from the others and stand for what I believe in. And this time my opinion stands strong - Speed Racer is awesome and I highly suggest it! If you want some confirmation from others, there are numerous positive reports in the comments here: http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/05/09/sound-off-speed-racer-what-did-you-think/
