Update on David Gordon Green's Future Projects - Remake of Six Pack and More!

July 26, 2008
If you're not familiar with David Gordon Green, you will be soon. I was first introduced to the filmmaker when I saw the fantastic drama Snow Angels at Sundance last year, which was an amazing indie gem that got buried in its theatrical release in March. Over a year later and now he's bringing us one of the most highly anticipated comedies of the year - Pineapple Express. I had the chance to talk with Green in person today at Comic-Con and he updated me on the status of a lot of future project that he's working on. From a fantasy dragon movie with Danny McBride to an arctic warfare movie to a remake of Six Pack to a demolition derby comedy, Green is an ambitious filmmaker and has a lot on his plate after Pineapple Express. If any of those ideas I mentioned made you smile, you'll definitely want to hear more!
David confirmed that he is writing a remake of Six Pack, the 1982 comedy about a race car driver that gets a change of pace when six kids join his pit crew and take him to new heights. The remake is already setup at Fox and is going to be a family movie about a bunch of crazy kids that "run the show" during Nascar races. This is the first time I've ever heard of it, even the original, but it sounds pretty quirky and hopefully will turn out entertaining. Additionally, David mentioned that he's writing an arctic warfare movie, although there aren't any more details on that, as well as a "shit-kicker demolition derby comedy" that he wrote with Danny McBride so that McBride could start as a demolition derby driver. Titled The Precious View, the comedy will star McBride and is just about "a crazy kid wrecking cars."
The last movie David mentioned was a project called Your Highness, an "amazing fantasy movie" about Danny McBride fighting dragons. This one has been mention previously, but isn't in development yet, although David said that it is setup at Universal. Apparently the film is just about a friend that smokes weed and fights dragons, or at least, creatures of some sort. When questioned about whether they would be CGI, David said they wouldn't. Instead, they'll be stop motion similar to Ray Harryhausen's work as well as puppets and other various things. He says they're currently working on a re-write, but that no one has "been crazy enough to let us loose on that." Too bad, because it sounds fantastic and I'd love to see this, especially after seeing Pineapple Express! Anyone else want to see this one come to life?
Although I already mentioned that I haven't heard of Six Pack, I'm pretty interested, despite it's a family film. Plus, David Gordon Green is a fantastic filmmaker and although he's only writing the script, his work on Snow Angels is convincing enough. Hopefully this talent translates to other various genres, including comedies and family films, although I'm not worried about that either. As for Your Highness, it's definitely similar to Jared Hess's project Gentlemen Broncos, another film I'm looking forward to seeing. Once everyone else gets to see Pineapple Express, they'll all probably take an interest in Green's future work as well. And at that point, you'll probably be excited for everything we mentioned, too! Unfortunately he's got so many awesome ideas that we probably won't see all of them or it'll take years before they finally see the light of day. Hopefully some of the better ones, like Your Highness, get made much sooner than later.
