Ilion Animation's Planet 51 Teaser Trailer Debut
January 16, 2009

Sony has debuted the teaser trailer for their upcoming animated movie Planet 51 developed by Ilion Animation. Unfortunately it's yet another unexciting animated movie that doesn't even look like it'll come close to anything that Pixar, or even DreamWorks, puts out these days. Even worse is that the story isn't their original idea. In 2007, I saw an indie animated film called Terra that had this exact plot - a human lands on an alien colony, befriends the peaceful inhabitants, then must protect them when his own kind comes attacking. It's a flip-flop on the typical alien story (think E.T.), but it doesn't work well here.

The inhabitants of Planet 51 live in fear of alien invasion. Their paranoia is realized when an astronaut arrives from Earth. Befriended by a young resident, he has to avoid capture in order to recover his spaceship and try to return home.
Planet 51 is co-directed by first-time filmmakers Jorge Blanco, Javier Abad, and Marcos MartÃnez of Ilion Animation based out of Madrid, Spain. The screenplay was written by Joe Stillman, of Shrek and Shrek 2 in addition to episodes of "Beavis and Butt-Head" and "King of the Hill" previously. Sony Pictures is landing Planet 51 in theaters everywhere on November 20th this upcoming Thanksgiving.

I like hardcore animated kids movies set in pre world war 2 era backgrounds. They are fun.

Looks terrible compared to 9 or Up…though I'm glad there's some competition out there to keep Pixar producing hits.

Looks very very cool. This film is not comparable to Pixar's productions since they have more to their backs and this is the first film of a novel animation studio. This must be considerate and clap as they have achieved a more than remarkable look in its first production.

Looks ok to me. This is purely for the young kids although Im sure I'd get some laughs out of it. Something like 9 is targeted at an older crowd and intended to be a bit more sophisticated.

Looks all right actually. I laughed. Maybe you can take your hype movies and shove 'em?

Looks better then half the crap Dreamworks and Sony are pumping out.
I liked it.

I loved that! The alien dog, lol! Who cares if the story's been done before, it's not identical and it's a cartoon. It for the visuals and some shits and giggles. My god, why is everyone so critical. Chill!

I dunno why you disliked this trailer so much, it actually doesn't look bad at all.
#11, TriStar is Sony.

I kind of hope that the astronaut doesn't have any actual speaking lines. It would be pretty funny if he was running around the whole time with a muffled scream - truly a monster that the aliens couldn't understand.

Looks as good as Pixar and Dreamworks stuff - if not more original than some of Dreamworks films.
Go Ilion!

I tend to agree with 10 through 13… I don't think it was awesome or anything, but it wasn't nearly as bad as depicted in the immediately condemning "reviews" I'm reading above.
Pretty sure there's a hilarious monkey in that space suit too

Alex:
I don't know about that indie movie, but the story of Planet51 was written on 2004 and the basic idea has been public for some time. So maybe the copying is the other way around, or maybe (more probable) it is just a coincidence.

Tom's totally right. If this guy only screams and mumbles for the whole movie, I'll love him. Otherwise, it looks fine for an animated flick. I think the Giger Alien dog is HILARIOUS though.

when I first heard about this I thought it would be live action and I was thinking a real serious movie, so this is a bit of a dissapointment but it still looks ok.
just cause its not as well animated as dreamworks or even pixar, doesnt mean it isnt good, I mean there are plenty of non pixar or dreamworks animated films that are great.

I think it also depends on what state the movie is in at this point. It says "teaser trailer." Those are typically earlier than the final trailer. To those in this topic trumpeting Pixar… I can name about 4 Pixar movies that had teaser trailers that made me think "That's not going to be good. They finally screwed up. Oh Pixar, what have you done." And lo, they hit a homerun, sure… but my point is the teaser trailers were not good.

3 flash ads on this page + your flash menu thing. trailer runs at 5 FPS due to gratuitous number of flash ads. had to manually lower quality of all ads. annoying. still runs like shit.
movie looks like shit as well. also annoying.

I think the astronaut is voiced by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Am I right? or was that just a rumor a while back? Anyways I enjoyed it! Looking forward to seeing more from these small animation studios. You got to understand that this is their first feature people.

Uhhhh, I might have found something creepier then Monsters vs. Aleins… Looks kinda kidish(and wierd) and it looks like a "been there, done that" movie too. I dought it'll hit, I've also noticed theres been alot of space movies recently, the best so far WALL*E. I agree with you one this one Al, a waste of time? Chances are, YES. The dog also creeps me out, though I must admit the last scene was funny!

I laughed at it. it had some nice things, but nothign special. not worth $10 bucks thats for sure.

What's wrong with that! Looks to have a fun, original style and it's silly and lovable; great stuff! Also, who can complain with Blink 182…
Don't get the alien dog thing though, that's just not funny to me. The human trying to walk as though he was on the moon was hilarious though!

Oh come on, that was funny! He's bouncing across the lawn. The alien kid gulps down the medicine. THAT WAS GREAT! xDD

This is quality stuff, and looks like it cost a fraction that it took to make WALL-E.
Not a big hit, but I expect mid-sized attendance and a good profit.
The Animated Film Arena has really gotten swollen now with competition.
Universal joined in with "The Tale of Despereaux" (Framestore Animation) and now Sony is pulling out more ambitious material with this "Planet 51" project (Ilian Animation). Both of these looked quite impressive.
Dreamworks and Pixar will need to go faster to stay ahead of this race.
