Jenkins and Whitford Join Whedon's Cabin in the Woods
January 21, 2009
by Brandon Lee Tenney
Last year we covered the first few details of Joss Whedon's upcoming film The Cabin in the Woods. Although details are still being tightly guarded, we can announce two of the film's stars today: Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. Jenkins most recently starred in The Visitor and Burn After Reading, while Whitford was most recently seen in Bottle Shock, and both are "proof that though The Cabin in the Woods is a classic horror film, it isn't one you've seen before," as co-writer/director Drew Goddard put it previously. This is the first sign that this horror film could turn out pretty great in Goddard's hands.
To catch you up, The Cabin in the Woods is about, well, just a cabin in the woods. Because we've no further plot information than that, I'll let Goddard explain the very Whedon-esque story in the most vague, yet titillating, of ways: "It's its own sub-genre, the cabin in the woods, and this is sort of our take on it. It's fresh and new. It's genius, it's funny. It's got a harder and darker edge, but it's also got classic Whedon qualities. It'll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time." Although Whedon sadly won't be directing (Goddard will be), he will be heavily involved as both the co-writer and the film's producer.
And as for Jenkins' and Whitford's characters in the film? Goddard told Hollywood Reporter that they'll be playing white-collar co-workers, each with mysterious connections to the cabin. No matter how little information we have thus far, I'm still extremely excited for the film to begin shooting this spring. As Whedon has re-imagined and twisted genres into poetic masterpieces before, so did Goddard with his script for Cloverfield. To be honest, if this team of filmmakers had announced they were set to re-imagine the dance film genre, I'd still be hopeful. How's The Cabin in the Woods sound to all of you?

Eh, not impressed yet. Could be good, but then again could be bad. I feel as if only knowing that its about a cabin in the woods and its being written by a good writer, really doesn't tell me much. shouldn't fall for the hype just yet.

Whedon is a god among men. No doubt he will restore my faith in horror movies. Unborn, Uninvited. and that 3d crapfest with Dean, please. Certainly for the unenlightened this is not sure-fire but for me I can't wait.
