Casting Update and Shoot Date for Polanski's The Ghost

After nearly two decades, the controversial but extremely talented Oscar winning filmmaker Roman Polanski will finally get back to directing with a contemporary thriller titled The Ghost, to begin shooting in Germany on February 4th of this year. We covered the original news last year when Nic Cage was still attached, but AICN broke the story today about the latest casting details after receiving the press release for the film, which also ably describes the sprawling adaptation of Robert Harris' novel of the same name. Cage has been replaced by Ewan McGregor and will be joined by Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, and others.
"The movie tells the story of a former British Prime Minister, Adam Lang (Brosnan), who is holed up on an island off the Eastern seaboard of the USA in midwinter, writing his memoirs. When his long-standing aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter (McGregor) is sent out to help him finish the book. The anonymous ghostwriter is quickly drawn into a political and sexual intrigue involving Lang's wife, Ruth (Olivia Williams) and his aide (Kim Cattrall). Hanging over Lang is the threat of a war crimes trial and a mysterious secret from his past that threatens to jeopardize international relations."
As you probably caught, along with Polanski behind the camera and the page, we'll be seeing the now powerhouse cast of Ewan McGregor (taking over for Nic Cage), Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Jim Belushi, and Olivia Williams in front of the camera. I really can't express my excitement for this project enough. I love Roman Polanski. He is a modern day master, deservedly on the same level as the likes of Scorsese, Spielberg, Coppola, and Scott. He's an auteur to the highest degree. And it's great to see him returning to what first made him so great. What are your thoughts on Polanski's return?

Yeah, I was under the impression he'd made a load of movies since then.
I wasn't aware of how much he looked like an older Stellan Skarsgård, though.

He won the Academy Award for The Pianist, however, all of his films for that nearly two decade span mentioned have been period pieces. This is his return to a contemporary thriller.

A genius director whose work I'll always go see. Shame that he has to be the type of person to commit the acts that he did.
And when I say that, I don't mean in the way I talk about how Russell Crowe and Sean Penn are sometimes dicks to some paparazzi. I mean that Polanski truly did something horrible. The justice system did fuck with him in some regard too. Whole thing was a damn fucking shame on both the part of the prosecution and the defense.
