Sam Mendes' Preacher to be Written by John August
January 22, 2009
by Brandon Lee Tenney
Preacher. We've been following the film adaptation of this quadruple Eisner Award-winning, Vertigo published comic book series for quite a long while now. It was at one point a very promising HBO series, but, as we covered last year, has since moved into the feature film arena albeit tentatively under the strained attachment to director Sam Mendes, as we also covered as recently as last week. So, what of this hotly anticipated property now? In my best Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth voice, "Good news, everyone!" Preacher has finally, at long last, found a writer - none other the John August! Surprised?
August confirmed on his blog that he has been tapped to adapt the critically adored series for the screen. August most recently wrote The Nines, but is probably best known for his collaborations with Tim Burton on Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. And what's even better, August has also confirmed that Sam Mendes is indeed attached to direct, having this to say of the project as it stands right now, "To answer your first four questions: there's no release date, no cast, no locations, no nothing. I'm writing a script which could become a movie if everything lines up correctly." There you have it.

I love the comics and to think they might do a movie about it…dunno if that's a good idea or not, but who knows? A lot of comics are coming out of the wood work lately.
I'm game to give it a try, got to know more info. Hopefully more info will be publicized soon enough.

the preacher is great fucking comic,i would cast clint eastwood as the saint of killers,i think the comic is to controversal to be adapted how fans would like to see it,most of the good bits would be cut, religous groups would go fucking apeshit on it's ass,the exocist was banned in certain countries for promoting christianity to much,so you are going to upset both sides of the coin i say fuck em i want this film now.

Sam Mendes is a great choice, but wouldn't the more obvious choices be Cronenbergh, Fincher or Aronofsky?
