Must Watch: Early Trailer for Claymation Mary and Max

This year's opening night film at Sundance was a claymation film called Mary and Max. The opening film always gets a good amount of early buzz, because every single member of the press usually sees it. I know I really enjoyed it and remember saying in my opening blog that the score (which you can hear in this), the animation, and the voices were the best parts. Thanks to Collider, we've got the first trailer for the film. This definitely isn't MPAA approved and contains some edgy language that probably won't show up in the official trailer. Speaking of which, Mary and Max never got picked up, so we don't know when it'll hit theaters.

A tale of friendship between two unlikely pen pals: Mary, a lonely, eight-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max, a forty-four-year old, severely obese man living in New York.
Mary and Max is both written and directed by Australian filmmaker Adam Elliot, of a few animated shorts like Harvie Krumpet previously. The film was developed by Melodrama Pictures and Mel Gibson's Icon Entertainment. It first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival as the Opening Night film but didn't find a distributor at the fest. Mary and Max will most likely end up in theaters sometime in late 2009.

This looks real cute. I'm a big fan of the young child/old man dynamic, there's such a complementary wisdom between the two.
Anyone know what that song in the very beginning is? It's familiar and I know I know it, I just can't put my finger on it…

Wow, thanks, Alex. I could've sworn I'd heard it before — it just made me smile, put me right into the spirit of it. Now I'm even more excited to see this… after all, god forbid a movie trailer actually use music from the film.

Meg is right…arggh…this is killing me, i know i've heard this song before (at least the first part) and just can't remember where…arggh…Some other trailer maybe… Please, someone take me out of this misery,lol.
And, 0.58, Twin Towers are up, 1.47, same shot, no Twin Towers, maybe that plays an important part in the story.
I didn't like the trailer though, doesn't seem magic at all, at least for what i see here.

Thank you, Barb! I knew I had heard it before. I wonder if they will have a soundtrack for the film, and if that particular arrangement will be on it. I prefer this simple piano version to the full orchestral version.
