Whedon's Cabin in the Woods Expands Its Cast, Or Does It?
January 31, 2009

Joss Whedon's The Cabin in the Woods has already found a couple cast members in Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, and now Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that the top secret Whedon/Goddard team-up is adding Jena Malone to its ranks. Malone has seen her fair share of genre work in films such as Donnie Darko and The Ruins. Bill Nighy is also rumored to be a part of the cast. But wait! Are we being played by the players themselves?! Joss Whedon posted the following on his official website regarding this most recent casting news, sending out his own misinformation about the project, and a Serenity sequel.
Turns out that the New York Times's info about the plot summary and the casting of Jena Malone and Bill Nighy is completely wrong.
This is misinformation. While we are fans of both those actors, neither is attached to the movie. Just FYI.
However, they ARE attached to the Serenity sequel.
Oh. Also, they got the plot wrong.
In order to protect the story from spoilerization, we've been sending out our OWN misinformation, including fake sides for the actors, fake summeries [sic], different names… So there's gonna be a lot of 'information' leaked that will lead to excited speculation about things you will not see. Sorry. But here's some stuff you CAN look forward to, my word on it:
1) A person will have an emotion.
2) two people speaking, or "dialogue", may occur.
3) A bunch of different people will play the part of Bob Dylan.
Hope that clears everything up. More updates soon!
Huh?! Again, The Cabin in the Woods is supposedly the end-all-be-all of horror films, twisting our expectations of the familiar people-stranded-in-the-woods scenario into something totally unexpected. Drew Goddard, writer of Cloverfield, is set to make his directorial debut with the script co-written by Joss Whedon and himself. I wouldn't expect to hear much more about this before its slated February 5th, 2010 release date — it's a project relying on the novelty and surprise of its subverted scenario, and it's looking like the filmmakers involved are going to great lengths to shield the truth and keep that surprise fully intact.
Do you all like this type of guarded secrecy? Is the film even going to be about a cabin or the woods?!

That's Whedon's "official site" in the same way G.I. Joe was "co-written" by Stuart Beattie and Skip Woods.

Sorry, my brain shut off after reading "Serenity sequel"? O.o
Is he kidding? If so, not funny.

I'm with you Andy, I think Whedon is a freaking champ!! Buffy was good, Angel I haven't seen (except his character in Buffy of course).
I'm not too jazzed about the misinformation - it kinda sounds like he's trying to toot his own horn. Is his work that special it needs to have misleading news done up for it? hmmmm
Serenity sequel? uhhhh…….what for? The first one was PERFECT.

Sometimes, it is good to not let word out too soon. For example, someone may want to iron out a few more details so that an anouncement has more context, and makes more sense. ANd his blog remark about his sending out fake reports seems like just a jest.
