Sundance 2009 Review: Jonathan Liebesman's The Killing Room

Jonathan Liebesman's The Killing Room

This is the first film from Sundance this year that really has no buzz even though it turned out to be a great film. The Killing Room is a very taut thriller based on the real life MK-ULTRA top secret government psychological program in which various volunteer test subjects are put in a tense situation. In The Killing Room, four people are brought into an all white room with a table and some chairs and given a test to fill out. They are told that they'll make $250 at the end of the day and participate in numerous phases. Just as the first phase begins, the leader pulls out a gun and shoots one of them in the head. And then we're off.

Antoine Fuqua Wants Sean Penn for Scarpa Project

Antoine Fuqua

Director Antoine Fuqua, of films like Training Day and Shooter, talked with ComingSoon after the Sundance premiere of his latest film, Brooklyn's Finest, about another project in the very early stages of development, a biopic based on the life of Gregory Scarpa Sr. For those of you unfamiliar with the goings on of the Colombo crime family, Scarpa Sr., also known as "The Grim Reaper", was their chief enforcer during the 70s and 80s and an FBI informant for over thirty years. And it's looking like the role of Scarpa Sr. may be played by none other than Sean Penn. Fuqua says the project is called Scarpa and that "it's New York again, Brooklyn, FBI, Italian gangsters, [and] it takes place from the '60s to the '90s."

Must Watch: Marc Webb's 500 Days of Summer Teaser

500 Days of Summer Teaser Trailer

Just barely after the world premiere of 500 Days of Summer at Sundance last night, our friends at Fox Searchlight have debuted a teaser trailer for the film. Before I even talk about this trailer, I saw this film just a few hours ago at its world premiere at Sundance and I loved it. It was wonderful, in every way, and is going to be a huge hit. Although this trailer does give you a good feel for the film, the voiceover with the guy saying "500 Days of Summer" over and over is a bit annoying. Ignore that part and sit back and enjoy, because when July comes around, this will definitely be the talk of the town.

Multiple Casting Updates for Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Kieran Culkin / Aubrey Plaza / Chris Evans

Hold on to your bass guitars and skinny jeans. Edgar Wright's anticipated adaptation of the indie comic Scott Pilgrim that we first mentioned last year has seen a recent torrent of casting news over the last week. And let me just say, the good news keeps flowin' from this charmingly offbeat tale. As a brief intro, Scott Pilgrim is about a 23-year-old Canadian slacker and wannabe-rockstar who plays bass in the band "Sex Bob-Omb" that falls in love with an American delivery girl but must defeat her seven "evil exes" in order to win her heart. There's obviously a bit more to it, but considering Wright needs to find at least seven evil exes, that means there's a lot of roles to be filled. The latest additions are as follows.

Must Watch: Awesome Trailer for Viking Sci-Fi Film Outlander

Outlander Trailer

Although we've seen a few trailers for Outlander previously, none of them have looked this good until now. IGN has debuted the latest trailer for Outlander to promote its last-minute January 23rd release. I haven't exactly heard great things about it, but watching this trailer makes me question why it doesn't have more buzz. This looks pretty awesome, even being set in the time of the Vikings. James Caviezel looks like a badass, as always, and both Ron Perlman and John Hurt also look pretty intense. If its playing near you (meaning probably only in New York or Los Angeles) in a few weeks, I'd suggest trying to catch it.

Sundance 2009 Day 2: It Was Too Good to Be True!

Sundance Film Festival - Storytime

I knew it was too good to be true! I had seen four films and almost all of them had been good. But it was inevitable - I had to eventually see a bad one. Tonight it was Toe to Toe, a high school drama set in Washington D.C. about one very determined black girl and one very promiscuous white girl. It was one of those films that's so bad, you want to just leave halfway through. Unfortunately there wasn't much going on elsewhere, so I decided to sit through it. And it didn't end up going anywhere and took forever to get to the end. Although there are always plenty of great films here at Sundance, there are also plenty of bad ones.

Sundance 2009 Review: Lynn Shelton's Humpday

Lynn Shelton's Humpday

Thought it couldn't get any gayer than Milk? Guess again. Well, that's not entirely true, but the concept of Humpday may throw some audiences for a loop, but I promise it's worth it in the end. In short, when an old college buddy unexpectedly shows up late one night, his arrival causes his friend's happily married life to take a wild spin. The two male buddies decide, while inebriated and in the company of other gays, to shoot a gay porn together just to prove their love for one each other. Don't worry, it's rather light-hearted and tremendously funny and should please audiences in a way they've never been pleased before.

First Look: The Where the Wild Things Are Monsters

First Look: Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are Monsters

Despite all the supposed troubles that Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are had with Warner Brothers, the movie is still being referred to by many as one of their most anticipated of this year. We haven't seen a trailer or a poster yet, though we have seen a few photos, all featuring Max and the Wild Thing. SlashFilm has found some new photos revealing nearly all of the monsters - but they come from the oddest place. Apparently Spike Jonze owns a skateboarding shop and is planning to put out of line of skateboards featuring the monsters on it. Yep, that's what these are, and yep, these are real. Take a look!

Sundance 2009 Review: Duncan Jones' Moon

Duncan Jones' Moon

It's very nerveracking having my third film into this festival be the one that I'm most excited to see. What if it's not that great? Will everything else here at Sundance look bleak afterwards? Thankfully that's not how it turned out, as I saw Moon today and thoroughly enjoyed it. My mind is a bit numb from the whole experience, which isn't actually a bad thing, primarily because the plot was so grueling yet engaging anyway. Moon is one of the few sci-fi features showing at Sundance this year and is a very intimate, low budget, yet fascinating film to watch. Not only does it look wonderful, but Sam Rockwell is flawless yet again.

Must Watch: Hilarious Red Band Trailer for I Love You, Man

I Love You, Man Trailer

Take a break from indie films for a moment for a bit of Hollywood humor. Paramount has debuted a red band trailer for Paul Rudd's upcoming comedy I Love You, Man that hits theaters in a few more months. This trailer is essentially a more vulgar version of the same trailer we ran back in December, but it's worth watching in order to get a sense of the kind of humor that's in the film, and also to check out Jon Favreau's character - which is one of the funniest. I've already seen it and it's definitely still as good as it looks (read my feedback here), so make sure you put I Love You, Man on your calendar this spring. It'll be worth it!
