McG Wants Will Smith for His 20,000 Leagues' Captain Nemo?
A few weeks ago we reported the news that McG would be helming a remake of Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. While it is yet another Hollywood remake, I claimed that it could potentially be a pretty awesome movie, especially with McG directing. Although he has yet to redeem himself after the Charlie's Angels movies, I think McG has found his calling with grittier big budget movies rather than comedic ones. Although we weren't expecting to see this 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for quite a few more years, McG apparently let slip to Latino Review that he's looking to get Will Smith in the role as Captain Nemo.

Stone Village Picks Up Josh Dobkin and Sean Wathen's The Field
The production company Stone Village Pictures, which was recently behind Love in the Time of Cholera and Turistas, has acquired a concept thriller called The Field, authored by TV support staff Josh Dobkin ("Scrubs") and Sean Wathen ("House"). The thriller is set in an endless field, where a group of strangers wake up with seemingly random items and must find a way out. Adding a taste of horror is the production company Benderspink (The Ring series, The Ruins), which will also executive produce. Not much else is known of the project at this time, nor is there insight into Dobkin and Wathen's foray into film.

John Steinbeck's East of Eden Gets a Director and Writer
Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment most recently optioned Nobel Prize-winner John Steinbeck's novel "East of Eden" back in 2004 (you can thank Oprah for that) and are finally hoping to begin production on the big-screen adaptation later this year. The studios have secured both a director and writer for the project -- Tom Hooper of HBO's "John Adams" and Christopher Hampton of Atonement -- despite earlier reports that Ron Howard and Paul Attanasio (The Good German) were involved. The 1952-published story spans 728 pages and, to crudely summarize, centers on life of the Trask brothers, Charles and Adam, drawing heavy inspiration from the Biblical story of Cain and Abel.

Samuel Jackson Might Not Be Returning as Nick Fury?!
A rather disappointing bit of news to report today, coming from Geoff Boucher of the LA Times' Hero Complex. Despite previous confirmations otherwise, apparently Samuel Jackson might not return as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury in the upcoming Marvel movies. "I saw Jon Favreau at the Scream Awards and we had a conversation. He said, 'I hope things are working out for you because we're writing stuff for you.' Then all of a sudden last week I talked to my agents and manager and things aren't really working that well," Jackson said. So what the heck happened since then? Well, it always comes down to money.

Kicking Off 2009 with Writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci - Part Two: Transformers 2
Now that we're well into 2009, it's time to start looking ahead at some of the big movies coming up this year. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, whether you're familiar with them or not, are directly responsible for two of this year's most highly anticipated summer features. Alex and Bob (as he's better known) are the screenwriters (and producers) behind J.J. Abrams' Star Trek as well as the writers of Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. So to kick off 2009, I talked exclusively with the two of them about everything from how they got into screenwriting, to their work on Trek and Transformers, to their plans in the future. Today, we finish our chat with Transformers 2 and beyond.

Worth Watching - Jan 14: Wacky Sci-Fi Spoof Alien Trespass Trailer
Roadside Attractions has debuted a wacky trailer for Alien Trespass on IGN today. Honestly, I'm not really sure how to describe this, other than just to say that it's a funky sci-fi spoof called Alien Trespass that stars Eric McCormack as a local astronomer who must save Earth. Will I see this? Probably. Will I see it in theaters? Probably not. It's rare that I really don't mind missing a movie in theaters, but this just strikes me as an ordinary cult classic spoof comedy rather than something truly unique. I commend director R.W. Goodwin for sticking to that old school visual style, but that's about all that looks good in this.

More Eye Candy - Another Three New Kick-Ass Photos
I'm going to preface this by mentioning that the fifth issue of Mark Millar's actual Kick-Ass comic hit shelves a few weeks ago, and it is as "kick ass" as the title itself. I love this comic and I can't get enough of it. It took forever for the fifth issue to come out, but it was worth it. Go buy it! And once you've read it, come back here and check out three new photos via HitFix from Matthew Vaughn's live-action version. To be honest, it's really hard to appreciate these unless you really know the comic itself. That said, take a look if you must, but just know that this will actually kick ass in the end, despite what you may think now.

Rockin' Crank 2: High Voltage Poster Hits the Web!
Although the crass trailer for Crank 2: High Voltage was taken down by the studio, we have an official teaser poster to keep hungry fans sated for the time being. Thanks to our friends at Latino Review for debuting this today. If you can't tell from the image itself, the poster is a "sequel" to the same poster that they used for the first Crank. We've included the two posters side-by-side for you to check out below. That teaser trailer was all I needed to see to convince me that this is going to be even more insane than the first movie and I can't wait to see it. Be sure to check this new poster out. Which one do you like better?

Jackie Chan Playing Mr. Miyagi in Karate Kid Remake!
Remember that news last year that Sony was remaking The Karate Kid? And that Will Smith's son Jaden was going to star as the new "kid"? Well here's another bit of casting news that could either make or break the project. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Jackie Chan will play Mr. Miyagi in the Chinese remake. And get this, they also confirm that one Harold Zwart, of the most recent Pink Panther 2, is directing. We all knew this was a bad idea to begin with, but now they've really gone overboard. I hope there is no one who is excited for this, even if you're a fan of Jackie Chan. I feel bad for Pat Morita!

Director Sam Mendes Still Not Fully Committed to Preacher
Back in November we were a bit confused about Vertigo's adaptation of Preacher, due in no small part to Variety's occasional quick-draw reporting wherein they claimed Sam Mendes was, in fact, directing the upcoming project. The truth is, a big-screen version of the tale of Jesse Custer, a preacher possessed by the offspring of an angel and demon, is still very much in development, and Sam Mendes is still very much in decision mode. MTV recently caught up with the Revolutionary Road director at the Golden Globes to set the record straight. In the interview, Mendes tells them, "Whether or not I have the skill to make it into a movie, I don't know... as soon as the script is there, I'll know whether I want to do it or not."

Check This Out: Final Poster for Howard McCain's Outlander
Sadly, Outlander is one of the movies we forgot about over the last few months, despite all the early buzz it nurtured last year. IGN has come to the rescue today with the final poster for the film, which stars James Caviezel as well as Ron Perlman, John Hurt, and Sophia Myles. For those who forgot, Outlander is an indie sci-fi movie about an alien who crash lands on Earth during the time of the Vikings and must fuse with them to help fight off an alien creature that also landed on Earth. I'm actually very interested in checking this out, despite hearing that it wasn't that amazing. And as for the poster, well, it's just Caviezel face.

Is Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary Next for Johnny Depp?
According to a casting sheet sent over to TheBadandUgly.com, Johnny Depp's next acting project will be that of The Rum Diary after he finishes playing The Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. The project is based on a Hunter S. Thompson novel where Depp will play Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean, known as The Rum Diary. The project has been in development for a while, with Bruce Robinson (of The Killing Fields and Jennifer Eight ) set to write and direct with a tentative start date of March.
