Christopher Campbell's The Moviegoer - Unseen on the Big Screen

The Godfather

I may be a cinephile and a cinemaphile, but I'm hardly a cinemaniac, which means I unfortunately don't see every new release that opens in theaters. And I certainly don't find enough time in the year to see even a fraction of the old films that play in the New York's revival houses and museums. So I should be pickier about what I actually do see on the big screen. Yet I saw Semi-Pro, Jumper and Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins all in the same month that I could have and should have instead seen Paranoid Park, The Band's Visit or any of the movies shown during Film Forum's Sidney Lumet retrospective (call me crazy, but I would have liked to have watched The Wiz on the big screen -- but it wasn't included in the series).

Warner Brothers Has Put All DC Comics Movies on Hold

DC Comics

An interesting update today regarding Warner Brothers and the DC Comics side of things. While that does include Watchmen, that's not exactly what this is about. IESB recently talked with David S. Goyer, who is credited for coming up with the story in The Dark Knight. When asked about the status of other comic book projects he's involved in (e.g. The Flash), Goyer told them that "a lot of the DC movies right now at Warner Brothers are all on hold while they figure out -- they're going to come up with some new plan, methodology, things like that -- so everything has just been pressed pause on at the moment."

2009 Directors Guild Awards Nominees Announced

Directors Guild of America - Christopher Nolan

The Directors Guild of America has announced the five nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2008. Given we also saw the Writers Guild Awards and Cinematographers Society Awards nominees this week already, let's just jump right into it. The nominees are: Christopher Nolan for The Dark Knight, Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire, David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon and Gus Van Sant for Milk. These are the exact same nominees as the Producers Guild, which means these five are surefire Oscar noms.

Must Watch: First Trailer for Dito Montiel's Fighting

Fighting Trailer

Yesterday we debuted a first look at two new photos from Dito Montiel's Fighting, about the world of underground street fighting. Today we have the first trailer and it looks pretty badass. Well, it does look kind of cheesy, but thanks to Terrence Howard and even Channing Tatum, I've got a feeling this might not be as bad as it seems at first glance. Too bad it's not rated R though, because now we know the violence is going to be toned down. This trailer would've been a lot better if it didn't have a terrible voiceover (that obviously isn't Don LaFontaine). Either way, give it a shot, maybe it will be a great movie in the end.

Watchmen Updates Galore - New Photos, Viral Site, and More!

The Comedian - Watchmen

One might imagine that with the legal battle at its height, talk of Watchmen would be at a standstill, but it happens to be quite the opposite. We've already featured a few new videos for Watchmen this week, but there's more today. First up, and most importantly, is news that Warner Brothers is asking that Judge Gary A. Feess move up the trial in which he will decide the outcome of the legal battle to as early as Monday, because "time is critical." Speaking of critical, Total Film has another new batch of photos. And the MPAA has rated the Tales of the Black Freighter animated tie-in movie R for "violent and grisly images."

Twilight's Taylor Lautner Will Return in New Moon

Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black in Twilight

Even though Twilight released to a tidal wave of fans and box office bliss, all was not right in the burgeoning franchise. Summit Entertainment didn't like director Catherine Hardwicke and claimed she was a pain to work with on set, so she was quickly replaced by Chris Weitz (of The Golden Compass). On the chopping block next was Taylor Lautner who starred as the Native American Jacob Black, and whom the studio felt was too weak to carry the rather important character into the sequels. Maybe they should have thought of that in the beginning? Unlike Hardwicke's departure, fans really didn't want Lautner to go, and it looks like Summit has caved to their whims. As of today, Lautner will officially return as Jacob in New Moon.

DiCaprio's Appian Way Picks Up Beat the Reaper Rights

Leonardo DiCaprio - Beat the Reaper

New Regency has acquired the screen rights to Josh Bazell's recently published novel Beat the Reaper. Appian Way is also co-producing, which means this project might star Leonardo DiCaprio, considering he owns that company. The story, which sounds it has the makings of an awesome movie, is about a Manhattan emergency room doctor whose life becomes complicated when a mobster recognizes the doc from his former life as a hitman who went into the witness protection program. I don't know about you, but to me that sounds like all the perfect elements of an exciting thriller, like Crank combined with Fugitive.

Must Watch: Intense Trailer for The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker Trailer

We've been waiting and waiting to see the first trailer for The Hurt Locker. Although it's yet another Iraq war movie, The Hurt Locker stands out as one of the most original and intense war films of the last few years. By now, Jeffrey Wells' unforgettable quote deserves to be on the poster: "Watching Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker is like having your heart operated on by a construction worker wielding a power pneumatic nail-driver. And the high-voltage stuff, which happens often, is, no joke, on the level of the armed creature-hunting and creature-evading sequences in Aliens." Yea, the trailer looks that good, too.

2009 Writers Guild Awards Nominees Announced

Writers Guild Awards

In addition to the American Society of Cinematographers, the Writers Guild of America has announced their nominees for the 2009 Writers Guild Awards today. The winners will be announced on Saturday, February 7th. There are three separate categories of nominees - original, adapted, and documentary. Last year's big winners were Juno and No Country for Old Men, both of which also took home an Oscar, which is why this is an important announcement. These nominees don't seem to be too far out of the ordinary and are a very strong indication of the probable Oscars nominations we'll be seeing in just a few weeks.

Check This Out: Early Futuristic Judge Dredd Concept Art

Early Futuristic Judge Dredd Concept Art

It's real! Back in December, just before the holidays, we ran an article about Judge Dredd coming back from the dead. Apparently DNA Films (the company behind Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later) has greenlit another Judge Dredd film that would be based on the 2000 AD comics and not a remake of Stallone's 1995 film. At the time, I had this feeling that it could've all been a bunch of BS. But apparently not! Our friends at io9 have got their hands on what is supposedly the first few concept art photos from the upcoming film. The art was drawn by 2000 AD artist Jock and show us what the new Judges and Mega-City look like.

Cinematography is one of the many aspects of filmmaking that I hold in very high regard. For me especially, I'm affected more by extraordinary cinematography than anything else. So I'm excited to announced the nominees for the 23rd Annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards. Like every other society or guild in Hollywood, the ASC hosts its own awards to honor the very best cinematographers from this year. If you've been arguing with your friends over who did the best work, then look no further, because these 5 individuals deserve this distinction. Without further a do, let's take a look at the nominees.
