Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Sugar Trailer Debut

Sugar Trailer

If you love baseball, this is the movie for you! Sugar follows Dominican born baseball pitcher Miguel "Sugar" Santos (played by Algenis Perez Soto), who gets recruited to play in the minor leagues in the US. It's an incredible look at the life of these born-to-play baseball players from the Dominican Republic and the culture shock they get when they arrive in America to start playing in the minor leagues. As great as this film is, it really doesn't go anywhere in the end, which left me a bit unsatisfied when I saw it at Sundance last year. But if you love baseball and/or just want to see a great character study, Sugar is a film not to miss.

Neil Marshall's Centurion Finds a Cast: Fassbender, West, Kurylenko

Michael Fassbender / Dominic West / Olga Kurylenko

Moving on from Doomsday, British writer/director Neil Marshall's next feature film will be that of Centurion, a Britain-set sword-and-sandals thriller. Filling up the cast for the film will be Michael Fassbender (of 300 and Hunger), Dominic West (of 300, Hannibal Rising, and Punisher: War Zone) and Olga Kurylenko (of Hitman, Max Payne, and Quantum of Solace). Production is expected to start sometime later this year. You see, I have a love / hate relationship with Neil Marshall - I loved The Descent, but really hated Doomsday, so I'm just not sure what to expect with this and if it'll actually be any good.

Check This Out: Empire Debuts New Hobbit Cover

Check This Out: Empire Debuts New Hobbit Cover

Okay, okay, I know this is just Smeagol from Lord of the Rings, but I get a chill realizing that we'll see be seeing Middle Earth again on the big screen in two years time. Empire has debuted their latest cover, which features everyone's favorite CGI wonder, Smeagol, looking quite happy. Why is he on the cover if they haven't even written the script or started shooting The Hobbit? "We feel it’s our duty to cheer you up – and what better way than by presenting to you our brand new issue... inside our special feature, you'll find a one-stop shop of information on the films that may be the most anticipated of the next few years."

Must Watch: One Final Trailer for Liam Neeson's Taken

One Final Trailer for Liam Neeson's Taken

If you really want to have an awesome experience seeing Taken for the first time in theaters, then do not watch this trailer. I'm running it because I still think there are plenty of people who need to be convinced to go see this. Remarkably, this film is even more badass than any trailer that we've seen so far, and I've been hearing from everyone I know that has watched it that they're enjoying it, too. It's such a great film and it's very sad to see it get buried in a January release. So do yourself a favor and make Taken the one film you see this month! Nothing is better than seeing Liam Neeson kick some serious French ass.

Guest Review: Sam Raimi's New Drag Me to Hell!

Drag Me to Hell

Sam Raimi and I had a falling out around 2002. And in 2004, we continued to drift. By 2007, well, let's just say we didn't even send a newsletter anymore. So when I found out that I was privy to an advanced test screening of Sam Raimi's upcoming camp-horror film Drag Me to Hell, I was apprehensive. Would this further cement our permanent departure from one another? To put Drag Me to Hell in perspective, Raimi hasn't directed a film with his trademark horror fare in over a decade -- Army of Darkness was his last in 1992. Well, Raimi has returned to true form -- resurrected like an Army of Darkness, you could say.

Check This Out: Special Delivery from Jason Voorhees!

Check This Out: Special Delivery from Jason Voorhees!

While I was away at Sundance, my roommate called and told me that a box had showed up that said "open slowly" on it. I wasn't sure what the heck it was, but when I finally got home I found out. Warner Brothers had sent over a special Jason Voorhees mask for the upcoming Friday the 13th, complete with classic sound effects and a postcard for Camp Crystal Lake. I finally get to see the finished film on Friday (how fitting), which makes this quite timely. This should definitely make Friday the 13th fans giddy with excitement, especially when they realize that Jason is back on the big screen in just over two weeks.

Seth Rogen Says His Green Hornet Movie is Still On

Seth Rogen - The Green Hornet

A few days ago we ran a rumor about The Green Hornet being canned by Sony. According to a recent update from the film's writer and star, Seth Rogen, that rumor just isn't true. Rogen contacted HitFix (the guys who reported the original story) and assured them that Sony still has every intention of making it. Apparently Stephen Chow's decision to leave as director might have caused a few people to lose their confidence and start questioning whether it would still get made, which is why a few of them thought it was being canned. But if Rogen has anything to do with it, and he does, it'll still happen as planned.

Oh No, Warner Brothers Really IS Bringing Back Lara Croft!

Angelina Jolies as Lara Croft

Last week, a big rumor hit the web stating that Megan Fox was in the running to take on the role of Lara Croft in a new Tomb Raider movie. I was tired of running stupid and highly unconfirmed rumors and decided not to mention it. But damnit, here I am today, reporting on yet another Tomb Raider movie! The good news (if you want to call it that) is that Megan Fox is not involved at all. Producer Dan Lin confirmed via Hollywood Reporter that he is in early development (meaning no writer or director yet) on a reboot of Tomb Raider at Warner Brothers instead of Paramount, where the original two films were released.

Joe Carnahan Taking Over Fox's A-Team Remake

Joe Carnahan

We've heard a lot about this new A-Team remake over the past year or so, but in the last update we wrote, John Singleton was still directing. Not anymore. Fox has hired Smokin' Joe Carnahan to take over the reigns with Tony and Ridley Scott's production company Scott Free handling the production side of things. They will still be using Skip Woods' script and are still keeping the planned June 11th, 2010 release date, meaning this will be fast-tracked and lined up as Carnahan's next project, instead of the numerous others he was supposedly involved with, including White Jazz, Bunny Lake Is Missing, and Killing Pablo.

Jose Padilha Directing Robert Ludlum's Sigma Protocol

Jose Padilha

Last June we announced that an adaptation of Robert Ludlum's last novel that he finished, Sigma Protocol, was being fast-tracked at Universal, with Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway penning the screenplay. Universal has announced today that Jose Padilha, of Bus 174 and The Elite Squad, will be getting his big break directing Sigma Protocol. Although the stories aren't the same, this project is being referred to as the next big franchise in line to replace the Bourne trilogy, primarily because Robert Ludlum penned the books for which both are based on. Padilha is gearing up for a summer shoot.

Jonathan Liebesman

South African director Jonathan Liebesman is finally starting to make a name for himself after directing Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. He's got The Killing Room coming out of Sundance quite quite a bit of buzz and has already lined up the alien invasion film Battle: Los Angeles next. But what about after that? How about a "spaghetti gladiator" movie? Liebesman revealed to us in our interview last week the preliminary details on his next project following Battle: LA, which he referred to as "one of those spaghetti westerns, but it's a spaghetti gladiator movie, so it's like that kind of film." What to know more?
