Rumor: Sony Might Be Canning Seth Rogen's Green Hornet
This news first hit the web on Saturday, so I've had a few days to mull it over and read other people's reactions. Now it's my turn to voice my own opinion. So the story goes that Drew McWeeny of HitFix talked to someone very close to the production of The Green Hornet recently who told him that it is "highly unlikely" that the film will shoot in 2009 and that it's very close to being canned. As we already know, Stephen Chow stepped down as director back in December due to "creative differences," which was the first sign that something was amiss. Although it's not confirmed, it sounds like The Green Hornet is in limbo.

Must Watch: Early Trailer for Claymation Mary and Max
This year's opening night film at Sundance was a claymation film called Mary and Max. The opening film always gets a good amount of early buzz, because every single member of the press usually sees it. I know I really enjoyed it and remember saying in my opening blog that the score (which you can hear in this), the animation, and the voices were the best parts. Thanks to Collider, we've got the first trailer for the film. This definitely isn't MPAA approved and contains some edgy language that probably won't show up in the official trailer. Speaking of which, Mary and Max never got picked up, so we don't know when it'll hit theaters.

Screenwriter John Rice Directing Hockey Comedy Stan's Cup
There is always room for more sports comedies, right? Well, what about more hockey comedies? John Rice will be making his directorial debut with his own screenplay for Stan's Cup, a comedy set in the world of old-timers' hockey. Rice previously wrote the screenplays for films like Chasers, The Calling, and Windtalkers. Stan's Cup is said to have a Full Monty vibe to it, with a focus on an unusual place and the eccentric people who inhabit it. In regards to that "unusual place" that they're looking for, the production will shoot in Warroad, Minnesota, referred to as Hockeytown USA, starting sometime in the spring.

2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards Winners
The winners of the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today via a live telecast on TNT. Sean Penn and Meryl Streep both took top prizes. I'm very happy to see both Penn and Streep win, as they were my own two top choices in their respective categories, and certainly deserved the win. Additionally, Slumdog Millionaire was honored with the Best Ensemble Cast award and The Dark Knight won the Best Ensemble Stunts award. SAG president Alan Rosenberg commented stating that the ceremony "is about celebrating what we do and what we have in common, rather than what divides us."

Imagi Animation is Out of Money and Temporarily Shutting Down?
We just heard some rather interesting, and alarming, news from a friend in the industry. Apparently Imagi Animation Studios is running out of money and may be temporarily shutting down operations. The official news will supposedly hit the wire tomorrow, but employees are being told not to show up to work starting on Monday. Imagi, based out of Hong Kong, is the animation company behind 2007's TMNT as well as the upcoming Astro Boy movie and also Gatchaman. We've already seen a teaser for Astro Boy and the film is slated to hit in October, which means it might be delayed if production stops for too long.

Kevin's Monster Review - Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Outlander
This weekend should prove particularly fun for sci-fi fans. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans takes us back to the beginning of the shadowy battle between vampires and lycans, while Outlander presents an altogether new conflict between ancient Vikings and what may be "the next big thing" in monsters of the genre, Moorwens. While each film maintains an engrained appeal for any fan of the category, it's Underworld that proves the better breed, thanks in large part to leads Bill Nighy and Michael Sheen. Outlander has the capable James Caviezel and John Hurt, sure, but neither do particularly well with the half-hearted story; whereas the origins tale for Underworld serves as a deft complement to the series.

Four New Retro Character Posters for Monsters vs Aliens
We were just sent over four new retro character posters for DreamWorks Animation's upcoming Monsters vs Aliens animated feature. I'm sure I don't need to explain that these are designed to look like classic movie posters. While the story is new, the film is an animated throwback to those kind of classic movies. DreamWorks' concept for this was to combine the classic monster movies with classic alien movies, and thus we now have Monsters vs Aliens. So check out these four new posters below and don't forget to pick up your 3-D glasses to see the 3-D trailer during the Super Bowl next weekend.

Sundance 2009 Review: Tommy Wirkola's Dead Snow
Tonight I caught a midnight screening of Dead Snow at the world famous Egyptian theater. After 7 days of seeing romantic dramas and quirky comedies, I was really in the mood for some gory zombie mayhem. Dead Snow is that Norwegian film about Nazi zombies. It's a simple enough story - a group of people head out to remote cabin in the mountains only to discover a party of undead Nazis terrorizing the area. To be honest, I didn't really care about how great the story was (or wasn't), because in the end, I had a great time watching this, and when it comes to cult zombie movies, that experience is what counts the most.

Check This Out: The Great Buck Howard Full Trailer
Believe it or not, The Great Buck Howard premiered at Sundance last year, and got scathing reviews from most critics. Also believe it or not, I really enjoyed it, even though it's a PG comedy about a failing magician. So here we have the trailer, and it's not all that great, but it should sell a couple of people and get a few of them in theaters. Unfortunately Magnolia is dumping it as quickly and as quietly as they can and they're marketing it to very specific audiences with this trailer. So even if you like this trailer, you probably won't be able to catch it in theaters. Oh well, check it out anyway, and let us know if you like it?
