Sundance Interview: Adventureland Director Greg Mottola
One Sundance film that already has quite a bit of buzz is Adventureland, primarily because we've already seen a trailer for it and also because it's director Greg Mottola's follow-up to Superbad. I sat down with Greg Mottola up at his condo the other day to chat about his film and this is the interview. Mottola and I talked about his inspiration for Adventureland, which is based on his own experiences, as well as casting choices and simply putting together a story like this. I've also already reviewed the film, so this is is just the final compliment and last bit we have on Adventureland from Sundance. Check it out below!

81st Academy Awards Nominees Announced!
The nominees for the 81st Academy Awards, the most prestigious award in Hollywood, have been announced today. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement this morning from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. No need to spend any more time introducing this, let's get right down to it! This certainly seems like a very interesting year for the Oscars, with a more typical selection than everyone was initially expecting. I'm a bit happy to see things like Wall-E's screenplay nom and Man on Wire's documentary nom, but what happened to The Dark Knight?! Take a look!

Sundance 2009 Review: Max Mayer's Adam
I thought it couldn't get any better than 500 Days of Summer here at Sundance. I loved that film so much, that hardly anything could even compare to it. But then I saw Adam, a wonderfully charming and beautiful story about falling in love. While it doesn't necessarily reach the same heights as 500 Days, it's the next best thing, and easily one of my very favorite films from the fest. Adam begins by showing us the stars in the sky while Rose Byrne explains in a voice over that she thought she knew everything about love, but it wasn't until she met Adam (Hugh Dancy) that she realized she had so much more to learn. As did I.

Warner Brothers Bringing Tom and Jerry Back From the Dead
It is physically and emotionally tearing me apart to report this news. As if the lowest common denominator wasn't already low enough with the likes of Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks and Scooby Doo in the zeitgeist of American cinema, Warner Brothers wants their own freakish CG/live-action hybrid. So, Tom and Jerry is being developed for the screen. Seriously, I've blacked out twice, and I'm only three sentences in. As much as I personally hate this, I will admit that it does make sense for WB. No matter the critical pounding Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks took, they were both very financially successful.

Another Brand New Poster for Pixar's Up!
Huh, this came out of nowhere. To continue the minimal marketing for their next feature film Up, Pixar has debuted yet another teaser poster to compliment the original one we ran in October. This poster features lead character Carl Fredricksen, his young sidekick Russell, and a dog that we haven't ever seen before, all riding on a hose hanging down from his floating house. Definitely looks fun but isn't anything too new, although at least it's some extra promotion. I hope Up is gaining as much early buzz as Wall-E had at the same time last year, because I hope it does as well as their past films. What do you think?

Sam Mendes' Preacher to be Written by John August
Preacher. We've been following the film adaptation of this quadruple Eisner Award-winning, Vertigo published comic book series for quite a long while now. It was at one point a very promising HBO series, but, as we covered last year, has since moved into the feature film arena albeit tentatively under the strained attachment to director Sam Mendes, as we also covered as recently as last week. So, what of this hotly anticipated property now? In my best Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth voice, "Good news, everyone!" Preacher has finally, at long last, found a writer - none other the John August! Surprised?

Casting Update and Shoot Date for Polanski's The Ghost
After nearly two decades, the controversial but extremely talented Oscar winning filmmaker Roman Polanski will finally get back to directing with a contemporary thriller titled The Ghost, to begin shooting in Germany on February 4th of this year. We covered the original news last year when Nic Cage was still attached, but AICN broke the story today about the latest casting details after receiving the press release for the film, which also ably describes the sprawling adaptation of Robert Harris' novel of the same name. Cage has been replaced by Ewan McGregor and will be joined by Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall, and others.

Check This Out: Another, Better Street Fighter Movie Poster
We were just sent a brand new poster for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li - and considering the last two posters they've revealed have been pretty bad, I think most people will be quite happy to see this one. Maybe? Besides the face of Kristin Kreuk, this also features some sort of Phantom of the Opera looking guy combined with Wolverine. I know it's the character of Vega, but still, it seems like they're trying to steal some of the X-Men Origins: Wolverine hype. I doubt this poster will have any impact on the buzz, but it's still cool to see something a bit better. Speaking of which, is anyone even going to see this?

Must Watch: An NBS Retrospective, 10 Years of Dr. Manhattan
Now that Warner Brothers is still bringing Watchmen out on March 6th, their viral marketing is kicking off in big ways. We previously revealed the details on the website TheNewFrontiersman.net before, but starting tomorrow they'll launch an extremely awesome, astonishingly geeky viral video of a 1970 NBS Nightly News report looking back at the then 10 year lifespan of Dr. Manhattan. Thankfully the video has showed up early (possibbly planned?) on YouTube and can be seen before. As everyone knows, I love viral marketing, so this just something cool to mention. Only 44 more days until Watchmen!

The Shadow May Actually Become The Shadows
Way, way back in 2006 we covered the confirmed involvement of Sam Raimi with the adaptation of 1930's pulp comic property The Shadow, from Street and Smith Publications, who printed a large number of the classic pulp series from the 30's and 40's. The comic was previously adapted in 1994 as a vehicle for Alec Baldwin. Since then, it's been quiet. Too quiet. That is, until now. MTV caught up with co-producer Michael Uslan (who's sharing producing duties with Sam Raimi) who revealed some details about the film that seem to be sending The Shadow in some bizarre directions, including switching up the identity.

Sundance 2009 Review: Greg Mottola's Adventureland
When it comes to coming of age comedies, Superbad still remains one of my all-time favorites. So going into Adventureland, which is Greg Mottola's follow-up to Superbad, I had set some very high expectations. Right off the bat, I'll say that it doesn't exactly come close to matching Superbad, but it's not supposed to. Adventureland, while still a comedy, is much more of a story about love. Thus I had to change my expectations midway through, and as a result, I still came out thoroughly enjoying the film. It's not exactly a hilarious romp through the quirky antics of an amusement park, but it is a story about growing up.

Jenkins and Whitford Join Whedon's Cabin in the Woods
Last year we covered the first few details of Joss Whedon's upcoming film The Cabin in the Woods. Although details are still being tightly guarded, we can announce two of the film's stars today: Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. Jenkins most recently starred in The Visitor and Burn After Reading, while Whitford was most recently seen in Bottle Shock, and both are "proof that though The Cabin in the Woods is a classic horror film, it isn't one you've seen before," as co-writer/director Drew Goddard put it previously. This is the first sign that this horror film could turn out pretty great in Goddard's hands.
