Marc Webb Developing Adaptation of The Spectacular Now

Marc Webb Developing Adaptation of The Spectacular Now

Marc Webb is well on his way to becoming the next big young filmmaker, with his directorial debut, 500 Days of Summer, getting plenty of mention at Sundance. But as is always the case in Hollywood, even before his first film comes out, we've got to start asking him about what's next. And next for Webb might be an adaptation of a book called "The Spectacular Now" written by Tim Tharp that hit bookshelves just last October. Webb told SlashFilm just the other day that the same two screenwriters behind 500 Days of Summer, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, are back adapting this book for Fox Searchlight again.

Bill Hader and Judd Apatow Doing a Slasher Movie?!

Bill Hader

Wow, there are some crazy rumors floating around these days. In addition to that Seth Rogen bit, another interesting one has popped over on CHUD involving none other than Bill Hader and Judd Apatow. Hader reveals a slasher movie concept: "It's partially Straw Dogs meets Halloween meets Home Alone meets Monster Squad." So how did all of this come together in the first place? "Judd met with us and said, 'I want to do a horror movie with you. I want to see you in a slasher movie.'" And there you have it. Will it ever get made? Who knows, but it's something I know I'd definitely love to see, even if it takes a few years.

Rumor: Wait, What, Seth Rogen as a Jesus Clone?!

Seth Rogen

Will Seth Rogen undertake the role of Jesus Christ? If Alexandre Aja has his way, this may just be the case. Aja, writer/director of gore-filled films High Tension and the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, is looking to adapt the bestselling French novel The Gospel According to Jimmy, a comedic departure from his usual bloody fare. Aja described the premise to SciFi: "A few years from now, the Republicans want to get back in the White House, and the only thing that they find is like an old cloning project... to clone Jesus from a blood cell on the Shroud of Turin. And one subject had survived, and he's fixing pools in LA, named Jimmy. And they're going to find him and ask him to come back and help them to get back to power."

Bob $tencil Does Sundance 2009 - Day 4 Video Recap!

Bob $tencil at Sundance 2009

Yes, that's Eliza Dushku. I think that's all we need to show you to get you to watch this one. Bob Stencil is back again live from Sundance, this time talking with the stars of Humpday, quite briefly, as well as Eliza Dushku, Ewan McGregor, and the guy who started the "Girls Gone Wild" videos. And to make you even more interested, it seems as if Dushku has the hots for Bob. Admittedly, this isn't the greatest Bob Stencil video we've seen this week, but then again, we've still got 5 more days of this festival left. Things are starting to get quieter around here in Park City, but Bob is still hitting Main Street harder than ever.

Indie Poster Premiere for The Great Buck Howard

Poster Premiere for The Great Buck Howard

We've got yet another indie film vying for you attention to feature today. The Great Buck Howard premiered at Sundance last year and unfortunately ended up with some dismal reviews and minimal buzz. It has taken forever to finally get to theaters, and now Magnolia Pictures is putting it out on March 20th. Cinematical has debuted the official poster, which is just as bland and boring as the teaser. I bet you thought I was going to say "as the film"? I actually really enjoyed it and think it deserves a bit more praise than it's getting. And because this doesn't do a good job of explaining what it's about, I'll get into that.

Sony Pushes Emmerich's 2012 From July to November

Roland Emmerich's 2012

Sony has announced today that they're pushing back the release of Roland Emmerich's 2012 from its July 10th date all the way to November 13th, just before Thanksgiving. The studio claims this move was made to "maximize playability" largely because they don't have a major tentpole film during the fall season this year. 2012 will now be competing with Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes as well as Fox's family comedy The Tooth Fairy, both opening the same weekend. Sony execs said 2012 could have been completed by its summer date, though the new date will add some extra time for the effects-laden production.

Sundance Interview: 500 Days of Summer Director Marc Webb

Marc Webb and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Everyone has already heard about 500 Days of Summer by now, the film that is well on its way to becoming the breakout hit of Sundance this year. First-time director Marc Webb is one of the key people (obviously) that made it such a brilliant film. What he was able to do with it and turn it into is why it's becoming such a beloved indie gem. Ever since I first saw it was showing at Sundance, Webb was one of the filmmakers I really wanted to interview while I was out here, in order to talk about his filmmaking process. Luckily I had that opportunity yesterday and the resulting interviewed turned out fantastic.

Sundance 2009 Day 4: In Love With Independent Film

Sundance Film Festival

Is it ironic, or just purely coincidental, that my favorite films of Sundance so far have been about falling in love? The two in particular that I'm talking about are 500 Days of Summer and Don't Let Me Drown. I've also seen around 4 or so other films about love and relationships, which in total makes up about half of the 15 films I've seen here so far. That also brings up another point. Only 15 films?! To the average moviegoer that's a lot of films to see in only 4 days time, but to me, I'm way behind. I only saw 2 today when I should be seeing 4 or 5 on a regular day. But that is the unpredictable, and crazy, Sundance life.

Sundance 2009 Review: Scott Sanders' Black Dynamite

Scott Sanders' Black Dynamite

Hot damn, this was a fuckin' blast! I really don't think there is any better way to describe it. I don't know how Black Dynamite even got in here at Sundance, but it did. And it was one hell of an awesome world premiere experience. I could already tell from the trailer that this was going to be one crazy ass film and it certainly was. Michael Jai White kicks some serious ass and brings us a new cult classic that will earn some of the biggest laughs this entire year. For me especially, Black Dynamite is this year's Hell Ride - another midnight movie that earned my "fuckin' badass" title. Except this one is blaxploitation at its finest.

Creepy Trailer for Dennis Quaid's Horror Film The Horsemen

The Horsemen Trailer

Focus Features has debuted the trailer for their upcoming horror film The Horsemen. I'm going to say, this looks really freakin' creepy. I think that part with that silver bowl that's sitting out in the snow just seems like a perfectly weird and scary start. I don't even know what's in it, but I expect it'll be very crazy. Dennis Quaid stars as a detective who discovers a shocking connection between himself and the suspects in a serial killing spree linked to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. More qualified horror fans need to give this trailer and shot and tell me if it actually does look any good? Or if it's yet another horror disaster?

Inside Man 2 Sees Screenwriter and Plot Changes

Inside Man

After the somewhat surprising success of Spike Lee's 2006 film Inside Man, talks of a sequel have been floating around for a couple of years. A script for the tentatively titled Inside Man 2, written by Russell Gewirtz, has even been circulating around Hollywood. However, when Lee sat down with MTV at the Sundance Film Festival, he confirmed that Gewirtz's script has been ditched along with its diamond heist plot line. Lee also added that writer/director Terry George would be taking over for Gewirtz in the writing department, but Lee was decidedly silent about what the new script's story will explore.

Sundance 2009 Review: Cruz Angeles' Don't Let Me Drown

Cruz Angeles' Don't Let Me Drown

Due to fervent encouragement from the guys at Latino Review, I decided to catch a screening of Don't Let Me Drown, a 2001 Brooklyn set coming-of-age drama. I'm glad I did, because I loved it. While the film isn't anything particularly new (like 500 Days of Summer) and takes a little while to first get going, it is a very funny and still very emotional and charming look at a few teenagers living in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks. I'm not entirely sure why, but when I finally got into the story, I found myself laughing out loud at every funny moment and happily smiling at the wonderful romantic scenes.
