Star Trek Invades WonderCon and Kicks My Ass Bad!

Star Trek

It's truly rare that I'm so blown away by a movie that I'm left breathless. It happens once or twice a year, like with The Dark Knight last year and Watchmen this year (so far). But today, watching the new trailer for J.J. Abams' Star Trek, shown for the first time exclusively at WonderCon in San Francisco, I was truly blown away. Before I get any further, everyone will be able to see this trailer in front of Watchmen next weekend, and online the following Monday, so don't worry, it won't be that long of wait. But wow, just wow, although I love both Transformers and Terminator, Star Trek is easily my most anticipated movie of the summer.

Take That Michael Bay - McG Says Terminator More Realistic

Terminator Salvation

In our latest installment of the on-going battle between directors Michael Bay and McG, Terminator Salvation director McG bragged to Digital Spy about the realism of his movie versus Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. "I think Transformers is a terrific picture, but that's a picture whose genesis is in a toy. They're sort of more colorful and optimistic and the pictures are sort of breakdancing and flips and backspins," McG said. "But ours is a very different, real world." If you haven't been following this "fight", it began when Michael Bay took a shot at McG, then he fired back to him in an interview later on.

Disney Wants a Hand Drawn Animated Movie Every 2 Years

The Princess and the Frog

Earlier today I caught a very entertaining panel at WonderCon in San Francisco moderated by Walt Disney Animation Studios visual effects supervisor Marlon West, who has spent the last few years working on Disney's The Princess and the Frog. While he did share a few short behind-the-scenes videos showing his work in that movie so far, the biggest bit of news to come out of the presentation came during the question and answer session, where West mentioned that Disney is looking to continue making one 2D hand drawn animated movie once every two or so years from now on. Good news for everyone? Definitely!

Star Trek's Costume Designer on Updating the Uniforms

Star Trek

As we get closer to yet another exciting summer movie season, I keep going over the big movies in my head and the one that continually comes to mind the most is Star Trek. I'm a big sci-fi nut and I'm very excited to see J.J. Abrams bring us a much more energetic and exciting Trek movie. There's a lot of good sci-fi offerings this summer (e.g. Terminator Salvation, Transformers 2), but this is the one I'm most excited about. Therefore, I've got a tendency to read almost everything that gets written about it, and occasionally I come across some fascinating articles. This one on TrekMovie.com this week is one such article.

Has Pixar Finally Decided to Make Monsters Inc 2?!

Monsters Inc.

Could it be true?! Early this morning my friend Thomas Huxley of Upcoming Pixar pointed me to an article published on a blog called Blue Sky Disney. They claim that Pixar has finally given the greenlight to director Pete Docter to start planning for his next movie after finishing Up, and it just so happens to be none other than Monsters Inc 2 - the most requested Pixar sequel (next to maybe The Incredibles). They don't give any other new details besides that it will be slated for 2013 and that Docter has been working on this sequel for a while, which all actually makes a lot of sense, but we're still not sure if it's completely true or not.

Three New Photos from Christian Alvart's Pandorum

Three New Photos from Christian Alvart's Pandorum

There was a time when I was actually excited for Pandorum. But with these three new photos, and a new plot synopsis, that excitement has quickly dissipated. Originally, I thought Pandorum was a sci-fi film about a crew who wakes up unexpectedly on a ship, kind of like Danny Boyle's Sunshine. While that is still how it starts, apparently it's about vampires and the human race being on the verge of extinction because of a plague that turns people into vampires. Worst of all, the people they find on the ship are "tribal warriors carrying crudely made weapons." Seriously, I thought we got enough of this tribal crap in Doomsday?

Check This Out: Rick Baker's Concept Art for Wolf Man

Check This Out: Rick Baker's Concept Art for Wolf Man

The last story we wrote about Joe Johnston's upcoming Wolf Man movie was late last year and it was about Universal deciding to push the release from April until November. Hence why it's great to finally have something to write about from Wolf Man, because I don't want this movie to get lost in the mix as we wait the nine remaining months until its release. Thanks to both SlashFilm and ShockTillYouDrop, a bunch of concept art depicting Benicio Del Toro's transformation into the Wolf Man was found on the ZBrushCentral forums. And if that teaser image above is any indication, these are pretty frickin' awesome to see.

Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal Singing in Damn Yankees

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey Singing in Damn Yankees

Haven't we had enough remake news this week already?! New Line Cinema has greenlit a remake of Damn Yankees, the sports-themed musical that first hit Broadway in 1955 and movie theaters later in 1958. Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal are both set to star in this contemporary version, with Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, the writers behind A League of Their Own and City Slickers, currently working the script, as well as Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the duo behind Hairspray, both producing. With an impressive line-up like that, I don't think we have anything to complain about, even if it is yet another remake.

Worth Watching - Feb 27: Trailer for Matt Aselton's Gigantic

Gigantic Trailer

Gigantic is one of those quirky indie films with a concept that only really works in the indie marketplace and at film festivals. In it, Paul Dano plays a mattress salesman who, on his own, decides to adopt an Asian baby, but before he gets approved, he meets the quirky and fun odd daughter, played by Zooey Deschanel, of a very rich and lazy man, played by John Goodman. Oh and he's also chased around New York City by a homeless guy who likes beating him up, and that's not a joke. Sadly it's not that great of a film, or at least, when I saw it at the Toronto Film Festival, it was one of my very least favorite films of that entire fest.

Platinum Dunes Bringing Us Even More Friday the 13th

Friday the 13th

I haven't read every last comment in our Sound Off post for Friday the 13th, but it sounds like most people seemed to enjoy it. Plus, a solid $57 million at the box office speaks louder than any fans ever will. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it looks like Platinum Dunes is moving forward with another Friday the 13th sequel. But come on, did anyone think they wouldn't eventually make one? Even their first big reboot, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, got a sequel/prequel even though it wasn't half as good as this. But anyway, staying on topic, if there's any horror franchise I could see more of, it's Friday the 13th.

Top Cow's Aphrodite IX Comic Headed to the Big Screen

Aphrodite IX

"This is just the kind of franchise we love: a visually stunning world, amazing effects, a great story and a hot, kick-ass babe in the lead. What could be better?" That's what producer Larry Kasanoff said about this comic book series. What could be better, you ask? How about a good movie, with a good director, and a good actress in the lead. I haven't even read the comic and this already reeks of Aeon Flux or Underworld. Top Cow's comic series Aphrodite IX, about a cyborg assassin who achieves self-awareness and begins searching for her origins, is being adapted for big screen in 3D by a group of big production companies.

Rumor: Drew Barrymore May Direct Third Twilight Movie?!

Drew Barrymore

Huh? So the little girl from E.T. always wanted to be a director? Who knew? Okay, this isn't as wild and crazy as it sounds at first glance, because Drew Barrymore actually just directed a movie starring Ellen Page called Whip It!. So unless she directs something in between now and next year, The Twilight Saga's Eclipse could be her second big directing gig. This rumor comes from Entertainment Weekly, where they say Barrymore is on a very short list of directors that Summit Entertainment is talking to about directing Eclipse. And while normally I don't care much about Twilight news, this is actually interesting for once.
