Monday Acquisitions: SPC Gets Whatever Works, Lionsgate Gets Push

Two big acquisitions worth mentioning today. The first is for the Sundance gem Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire, which was officially picked up by Lionsgate. No, this isn't the superhero movie that comes out this weekend, it's the New York City drama of the same name. This news was originally reported by Film School Rejects, so they deserve the credit. Secondly, Woody Allen's Whatever Works starring Larry David and Evan Rachel Wood was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics. Allen's last 2 films were distributed by The Weinstein Company, but this time around he's going back to his old partner.
Both of these films will remain on our radar throughout the year. I'm looking forward to Whatever Works quite a bit and hope that Sony Pictures Classics handles it better than The Weinstein Company would have, but then again, SPC can sometimes be very flaky as well. As for Push, I saw the film at Sundance and definitely think it's a very powerful film with strong awards potential. Both Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey helped secure the deal at Lionsgate, with each supporting the release and presenting the film with their name attached. Keep on the look out for both Push and Whatever Works in theaters later this year!

I also heard today through Deadlinehollywood and a few postings on IMDB that the deal for BROOKLYN'S FINEST has fell through.
