Soderbergh to Direct, Pitt to Star in Moneyball Adaptation

Steven Soderbergh, fresh off the release of his two-part biopic Che, is set to make the big-screen adaptation of Michael Lewis' book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning An Unfair Game" his next directing project. Brad Pitt is set to re-team with Soderbergh and star as the main character Billy Beane. The book is being adapted by Oscar winning writer Steven Zaillian, of American Gangster most recently. Moneyball centers on Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics, who used sophisticated computer analysis systems to piece together a team that regularly contended for the World Series despite possessing a payroll dramatically lower than big-market rivals like the New York Yankees. This should be great!
Soderbergh might be the hardest working filmmaker in Hollywood. Che is just hitting theaters, The Girlfriend Experience is set to show at the Tribeca Film Festival, and The Informant is due out on September 18th later this year. He was originally supposed to go right into his Cleopatra musical Cleo with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Hugh Jackman, but had to push it back to next year. Since he's always wanted to make a sports film and now can work again with Pitt, Soderbergh decided to make Moneyball his next project. I've been very excited for this since we first reported it in March last year, but this news tops it all! A great book, great director, great actor, great screenwriter - I think we're guaranteed a great film!

Oh. My. God. Oh my god oh my god oh my god. I am so excited for this now. Beane is my idol and this book was amazing. I'll be waiting for this almost as bad as Watchmen

It sounds too good to be true but "we're guaranteed a great film" i wouldn't go that far. There's no guarantees in Hollywood.

I LOVED Moneyball! It's amazing to read about the "behind the scenes" stuff that goes on with baseball. Brad Pitt as Billy Beane?! AWESOME!

Soderbergh and sports? Hmmm…. remember when Sam Raimi made a baseball flick? Still, I like the sound of a sports pic with the attention to detail that Soderbergh brings to the table. We need the sports genre to be re-invented.
