Brad Bird Updates the Status of His Earthquake Project 1906

The last we heard from Ratatouille director Brad Bird on his live-action earthquake project 1906 was in March of last year, so it's about time we finally get an update on it. I've personally bit looking forward to the project quite a bit and have been hoping that it didn't get caught up in production hell, which is a possibility given the concept. Well, Latino Review just spoke with Bird recently and got some updates on the status of 1906, but unfortunately it's still not ready yet. "We're looking at places to shoot it. The script, I'm still working. It's a really hard script to write," Bird says. "We'll see if they have the courage to make it."
As a reminder, 1906 is based on James Dalessandro's novel of the same name about the great San Francisco earthquake and fire. From there, we'll let Brad Bird himself describe where the story goes. "The simple way to sum it up would be to say it's a romantic, epic mystery with lots of action in it, based around events leading up to and through the earthquake of San Francisco of 1906." Although Brad Bird is known best for directing both The Incredibles and Ratatouille at Pixar, he's going live action with 1906. But, as he says, that doesn't mean he'll leave out CGI entirely. "But obviously San Francisco doesn't exist anymore the way that it was, so that would all be special effects, much like New York was special effects in Kong."
Speaking of production hell, Bird's last update surrounds his interest in going live-action over doing more animation for Pixar. "I've been wanting to do it a long time. When I was in development hell, which was a really long period of time, half the projects I had in development were live action and half were animated, and animation, they gave me an opportunity and once I had that opportunity, I got more opportunities so I'm taking advantage of the chance to do live action, but I'm interested in both. To me it's all filmmaking." I hope 1906 still gets off the ground sooner than later, because I'm anxious for more of his filmmaking!

yeah, number 2 is stupid. when everyone drew parallels with The Spirit as being Sin City 2, that made sense. It visually looked the same and had the City play a crucial role. 1906 is 100% different from Incredibles. Ones about a Superhero Family, the other is an earthquake. You, Mr. Ramez, suck at drawing parallels. You probably heard about Speilburg's Lincoln and said, "Oh boy, here comes Jaws 4"

1906 is an interesting idea. Combining calamity with doomed love could be a winning formula.
