Richard Jenkins and Aaron Eckhart Join The Rum Diary
February 10, 2009
by Alex Billington
Johnny Depp fans get ready, it looks like The Rum Diary is going to be Depp's next big project. We recently heard that Amber Heard had joined the cast and today we've got two more names to add to the call sheet - Richard Jenkins and Aaron Eckhart. Eckhart will play Sanderson, the final leg of the love triangle that Depp and Heard are all involved in on the island of Puerto Rico during the 1960s. Depp plays Hunter S. Thompson's altar ego Paul Kemp, a divorced alcoholic and struggling novelist who takes a job at the titular newspaper as a journalist and gets involved in a corrupt hotel development scheme.
The Rum Diary is based on Hunter S. Thompson's novel and is being adapted and directed by Bruce Robinson. Jenkins will play Lotterman, the man who oversees the rundown newspaper where Kemp works. Casting these two actors alongside of Depp and Heard has just made this one of my most anticipated upcoming projects. I just feel like both Eckhart and Jenkins are some of the two most talented and underused actors around and seeing them take on this project is very exciting. I don't know that much about the story, but it sounds quite interesting. I'll let you know when we hear more about this project!

I think the bigger story here is the director, Bruce Robinson. With all due respect to the exciting actors, it is him who will make the movie the way it will be.
And Robinson didn't direct a movie from early nineties, and although we all very fond of his "Withnail & I", I have my doubts about whether he is correct choice to make such movie.
But I'm just going to be optimistic right now.
