Darren Bousman's Next is a Submarine Heist Movie
February 11, 2009
by Alex Billington
Darren Bousman, the talented director behind Saw II, III, and IV as well as the cult classic Repo! The Genetic Opera, has decided to leave the horror genre behind for his next project. Over the last year, Bousman has mention in interviews that his next movie would be in the action genre and definitely not horror, but he's never revealed what it would be. Just as Bousman finishes the last leg of his Repo! road tour, details have finally been revealed regarding the project, titled Akula, and only described as a heist film set on a submarine. "The tone is dark, but very different from the films I've directed recently."
The script for Akula was originally written by Mark Distefano, of only Friends and Enemies previously; Alex Litvak is currently working on a rewrite. Jeremy Bolt and Paul W.S. Anderson are producing for Constantin Film. The project was originally known as The Akula Job and is about a career criminal who teams up with a DEA agent that is determined to pull off a diamond heist on a submarine. Sounds pretty damn cool to me and I'm already very interested, primarily because I think Bousman is a very talented director. Also curious to hear more about the heist story as well. Can't wait to see how he does outside of the horror genre!

I was interested until I saw the name "Paul W.S. Anderson" mentioned… He gets a lot of criticism, so I feel bad for adding to it, but I think others might share my concerns. Still, Bousman's films are kind of fun and his MySpace blogs are always very passionate and enthusiastic, so if Anderson's only producing rather than contributing to the script, this could be worth checking out.

Sounds like The Italian Job meets Crimson Tide.

Sounds a lot like a recycling of "Assault on a Queen" a 1960's Frank Sinatra movie with a screenplay by Rod Serling of Twilight Zone fame. In that film Frankie and crew rejuvinate a German U-boat and assault the Cunard liner "Queen Mary".

I met Darren Lynn Bousman and his fiance at the last Repo! Road Tour show, they are great people and Darren has plenty of good ideas in his head. He told me a little about this one and I'm completely behind it. I want him to succeed he's just too good of a guy to fall off the edge of the earth now.
