William Monahan Adapting John Grisham's The Associate
February 17, 2009
by Alex Billington
While we've heard plenty about The Associate before, the latest news regarding Paramount's big screen adaptation of John Grisham's legal thriller is that Oscar winning writer of The Departed, William Monahan, has been hired to adapt the novel. They're doing this completely out of order, because Shia LaBeouf got attached before Monahan was even hired. And now Monahan, who also has a plethora of his own projects in development, will have to figure out how to get this written in between his other projects. Either way, this has definitely become a high profile project in the hands of Monahan and LaBeouf.
The other good news regarding The Associate is that Lorenzo di Bonaventura is producing. He's behind everything at Paramount from Shooter to Transformers to Stardust to G.I. Joe to the upcoming Matarese Circle. He's one of the hottest producers in Hollywood at the moment, which means this won't be anything quickly forgettable. LaBeouf will play a Yale Law School student with a sordid secret that leaves him vulnerable to blackmail. He's manipulated into taking a job at a law firm and working on a multibillion-dollar lawsuit. Pick up a copy of the The Associate book on Amazon until we hear more about this production.

Hmm, I have a lot of friends who read Grisham and they said while this book is decent, it is certainly one of Grisham's most generic which worries me. Hopefully Monahan will be able to spruce things up a bit.

I agree Ryan, I read John Grisham and The Associate isn't the best by far. I would say they should make the movie off of "A Time to Kill" or "The Chamber" or something like that. But eh, what do i know about making movies….
