500 Days of Summer Moved Up One Week in July
February 18, 2009
by Alex Billington
What are you doing on Friday, July 17th? Well, besides seeing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, of course! After you watch Harry and Dumbledore battle some Inferi in the caves, you're going to go see 500 Days of Summer. Listen to what I'm saying - you are going to go see 500 Days of Summer! Director Marc Webb's wonderful romantic comedy that became a Sundance sensation this year was initially scheduled for release on July 24th, but Fox Searchlight has moved up its release by one week. Don't worry too much, it'll probably open limited on the 17th and expand further throughout late July and early August.
I'm usually opposed to summer releases for great indie films, but there's numerous reasons why this will still work. First and foremost, due to its title, this has to be released in the summer. It just wouldn't be right releasing a movie called 500 Days of Summer in the fall, would it? While that title might not actually pertain to the season known as summer (hint, hint), it's still a great title. Secondly, this just has that kind of happy-go-lucky indie feeling that should fare very well in late July / early August. Expect to hear a lot more about 500 Days of Summer right around the same time as Harry Potter. You won't want to miss it!

I've heard so many great things about this movie. However I do hope it gets a limited release on that date b/c Harry Potter would probably bury it and it seems like the type of film that deserves to stand out.
