More Interesting Terminator Viral - Skynet Security System
February 20, 2009
by Alex Billington
Things are getting very interesting with the Terminator Salvation viral. You all probably remember the Skynet Research website that launched last week, with a bunch of weird information about prototype Skynet models and robotic research. I'm a big viral marketing nut, so when things start to get interesting and cool things start to happen, I take notice and its makes me excited. And the recent buzz regarding this viral is that Skynet has launched a Skynet Security System which is linked in with a whole bunch of comic book stores around the US. There is an intro video to be watched and more details that have popped up.
"Skynet Research is always watching you." Kind of creepy, no? Over on the website, it says: "Each unit contains a sensor capable of observing the entire spectrum from infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths, assuring it can detect the unlawful displacement of any item at any time. Storeowners are alerted with a phone call during business hours, while local law enforcement is also contacted if theft occurs when the store is closed." Watch the video below for a demonstration from a local comic book store owner.
You can also find a very big list of the comic book stores that have this security system installed on the Skynet website. Here's the thing though - I have no clue what this does or what it even means? Though I've got a feeling I know where the viral is headed. We all know what happens in Terminator - the robots (from Skynet) take over the world. Well, they're integrating themselves everywhere as we speak, and these are the first steps. Peter from SlashFilm received an "Enhancement Model" attachment that syncs with Skynet and now comic book shops are installing security systems (think control and lockdown systems) as well.
So what happens next? I'm not so sure, exactly, and I'm personally wondering what goes on at the comic book stores. Do we need to go down there and do something or is there some other way that we get to interact with the comic book stores? No one is really sure what will happen next. Though some people have noticed that a password prompt shows up on the Products page, but no one knows the password. Any idea? Of course, we'll let you know if we hear anything. I'm hoping this really ramps up into a full-scale Skynet invasion because that would be awesome to see, much like the Joker's invasion last year. Stay tuned!

St. Marks Comics?! That's in downtown Manhattan. Wish I had the time to check it out.

I'm pretty sure this was made by St Mark's comics themselves - which is totally cool!
McG's gotta wise up and start cranking out some actually enjoyable viral stuff, along the lines of this, VOTE Harvey Dent, and the Watchmen.
Unless I'm wrong, and this is official (though not noted on the skynet website) , I think basically Salvation suffers from a serious, serious, serious bout of it's marketing thus far taking it's material too seriously.
I mean, now that Bale's tirade's out o the bag, they should simply accept that THAT is, so far, the single highest profile bumper that's come up for them.
I say embrace it - make some funny Skynet promos. Create a contest. NOW.

Courtesy of /film, I signed up for my very own robot enhancer. Hoping they'll actually mail me something!

I bet the password is from T2 when John Connor is hacking the pin to get into the Skynet vault and steal the microprocessor…

I agree with #5
This viral comes off as dry humor.
Doesn't really fit the franchise.
