Worth Watching - Feb 22: Flame and Citron Trailer

Flame & Citron is a thrilling Danish WWII film about two freedom fighters and assassins named Flame (played by Thure Lindhardt, left above) and Citron (played by Mads Mikkelsen, right above). I first saw it at the Telluride Film Festival last year and was considerably impressed, as it's an unrelenting and entirely non-Hollywood kind of WWII film with some exceptional performances. The two are assigned to go kill high ranking Nazis in Denmark and are subsequently heralded as national heroes. This is based on reality as well, which makes it all the more fascinating to watch. I will definitely suggest this to anyone interested.
In my Telluride review, I gave Flame & Citron a 7 out of 10, and said, "I was definitely surprised walking out by how much I enjoyed this… this could be a big Oscar contender for Denmark." Thoughts?

Flame & Citron aka Flammen & Citronen is directed by Danish filmmaker Ole Christian Madsen, of Pizza King, Kira's Reason, and Prague previously. The screenplay was co-written by Madsen and fellow Danish writer Lars Andersen, of Sinan's Wedding and Pizza King previously. The film is inspired by the real life stories of freedom fighters Bent Faurschou-Hviid (aka "Flame") and Jorgen Haagen Schmith (aka "Citron") in Denmark during World War II. This first premiered at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals last year and was picked up by IFC Films. Flame & Citron will arrive in limited theaters starting on March 9th.

Obsession with nazis? why because a whole two other movies came out on WW2 (valkyrie,defiance) if ya ask me the potential of ww2 films hasnt even been touched.

Let's see: Valkyrie, Defiance, The Reader, Miracle at St. Anna, Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Inglourious Basterds, Wolverine Origins, that Nazi zombie movie . . .even Australia was about WWII, and Benjamin Button had an episode dealing with it.
But that doesn't mean I wouldn't be willing to see this.

Looks very good - the non hollywood ww2 films always tend to be better - so its good to see this amongst Valkyrie, Miracle, Definace etc as they all failed tremendously in my books. Last good ww2 film i saw was Black Book.

The film is an important one for both Danes and for other countries where a strong resistance to the Germans during WWII existed. In many of those countries the resistance fighters are entirely "heroic" and of course anyone alive at the time in those countries was a member of said resistance, unless they were the big bad occupying Germans. (This is, of course, a view through rose-colored glasses in 20/20 hindsight written after the Germans surrendered.) As this movie shows, such was not actually the case, and as the director Madsen shows us, life was, and never is, black and white and sometimes "heros" are really just outsiders with nothing left to lose, who can be manipulated, as the two lead characters may have been. I hope this movie does show up in theaters in the USA soon (or better yet later in the year?) and I think it could potentially be an Oscar Nominee for the 82'nd Awards (in Feb 2010)-if it does in fact qualify; the rules are recently changed.
