Astro Boy is Back on Track for an October Debut
February 24, 2009
by Alex Billington
It would only be the right thing to do to report that Imagi Animation Studios has received an extra $25 million in financing in order to continue work on their feature films. Back in late January, we exclusively reported that Imagi had run out of money and was shutting down temporarily until it could figure out what to do. Variety confirmed today via Imagi's US president Erin Corbett that they have received the funding they needed and will resume operations this week. This means Astro Boy is still on track for its October 23rd release from Summit and that work will continue on their other projects, Gatchaman and Tusker.
When I ran a few new photos from Astro Boy that had appeared recently, I mentioned that the footage I had seen at the New York Comic Con, although it was unfinished, had changed my opinion entirely on the movie. Initially I wasn't too excited based on the teaser trailer, but I've come around after seeing the footage and now I'm excited again. Astro Boy is being directed by Flushed Away's David Bowers and features a voice cast that includes Freddie Highmore as Astro Boy as well as Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy, Donald Sutherland and Kristen Bell. We'll see everyone in theaters on October 23rd for its official debut!

Who owns Imagi anyway?
Was my understanding there are three major movie studios (and all the rest are subsidiaries)
Anyway, with a cast like this, looks like a show I grew up on might not get totally trashed.
Awesome sauce. =)
