Cate Blanchett to Play Maid Marian in Ridley's Nottingham?
As we have reported plenty of times before, Ridley Scott's Nottingham has had quite a rocky road in its development. Last we heard in December, Ridley was trying to get it made sometime this year, but was without a leading lady, since Sienna Miller had dropped out as Maid Marian. So who will replace her? How about Cate Blanchett? The UK's Telegraph newspaper (via SlashFilm) has a scoop on the casting that comes from actor Mark Strong (whom we interviewed last year). Strong, who will play Sir Guy of Gisbourne in Nottingham, told the Telegraph on the red carpet that Blanchett was taking on the role.

Bryan Lee O'Malley Explains Scott Pilgrim Animation
Last week we ran a rather interesting news tidbit regarding Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, based on an Oni Press comic book series written and drawn by Bryan Lee O'Malley (seen above). Actor Brandon Routh, who has a role in the film as an evil ex-boyfriend, said that it will feature "a mix of real people and drawn animation." After the news hit, a reader wrote in our comments that they had asked Bryan Lee O'Malley about this and his response that he had "no idea" what Routh was talking about. Well, courtesy of the New York Comic Con, MTV followed up with O'Malley and got a bit of clarification.

A Day in the Life at the New York Comic Con
This year's New York Comic Con wasn't as exciting as last year's; since it's earlier in the year, the movie studios didn't have too much to show. Although there weren't as many panels, the show floor was just as big, and as always, I love hitting up comic conventions just to check out the booths. So to give all of you a better idea of what it's like here at the NYCC and give you a glimpse of a day in the life of an attendee like myself, I shot a little video of my adventures on the show floor. It's rather short (only 5 minutes), but I tried to briefly record what this convention is like in comparison to San Diego and otherwise. I hope you enjoy!

Milk and Slumdog Win 2009 Writers Guild Awards
The winners of the 2009 Writers Guild Awards were announced last night at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. This year's winners fall right in line with everyone's expectations and are the last of the guild awards that are probable an indication of what's to come with the Oscars on February 22nd. The WGA winners have matched Oscar winners in the original screenplay category in 9 of the last 14 years, including last year's wins by Diablo Cody for Juno. In the adapted screenplay race, the WGA winner has gone on to an Oscar 10 times in the last 14 years, including Joel and Ethan Coen's No Country for Old Men last year.

NYCC: Early Reaction to First 45 Minutes of Pixar's Up
Tonight at the New York Comic Con, I caught a special presentation of roughly 45 minutes of Pixar's latest film, Up. This footage was first shown at AICN's Butt-Numb-a-Thon, but hasn't otherwise been publicly screened anywhere else until today. We've seen trailers and early footage from the San Diego Comic-Con last year, so we know what, and who, the story is all about. But let me just tell you, there is so much more in Up that we don't know about. Pixar has done a fantastic job of keeping things secret. And I'm going to reveal some of what I saw, because I think it's worth it, so you've been warned about spoilers below!

Full Tron 2.0 Trailer at the San Diego Comic-Con This Year
Everyone knows that Tron 2.0 is one of my most highly anticipated movies coming up in the next few years. The first teaser trailer premiered at the San Diego Comic-Con last year, but I wasn't at the panel when it showed. Luckily I got to see it in 3D at a later point in time. But according to Radical Studios publisher Barry Levine (via io9), the full Tron 2.0 trailer is going to get its world premiere at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. For clarification, as we reported previously, that teaser from last year was test footage that director Joseph Kosinski made on his own and that Disney decided to show to gauge the reaction.

Jeremy Renner Might Join Sylvain White's The Losers
We first reported that Vertigo's The Losers was being adapted by Stomp The Yard director Sylvain White back in November. We haven't heard much since then, and we're not sure if it's still on track, but we do have a lead on who might be joining the project. Jeremy Renner, who stars in The Hurt Locker, The Assassination of Jesse James, and 28 Weeks Later, told ComingSoon today at the New York Comic Con that The Losers is one of the projects that he's looking at joining soon. He didn't say which character he's interested in, but said that it's a "very interesting anti-hero graphic novel, I love that sort of thing."

Dave Gibbons Confirms There is No Squid in Watchmen
One of the biggest questions surrounding the Watchmen movie that still remains unanswered, for good reason, is about whether or not the "squid" ending remains intact. While we're not going to spoil the ending, there's nothing wrong with telling you what will not be appearing in the movie - and that's the squid. Artist Dave Gibbons appeared at the New York Comic-Con earlier today during Warner Brothers' Watchmen presentation and fielded questions from fans after sharing some new footage. When asked about the squid, Gibbons tried to dodge the answer, but did eventually say "the outcome is exactly the same as the novel."

Worth Watching - Feb 7: Jan Troell's Everlasting Moments Trailer
Sweden's entry into the Academy Awards this year was a film called Everlasting Moments from filmmaker Jan Troell, a revered director who has been working in Sweden for over 40 years. IFC asked me to feature this trailer today and I watched it and thought it'd be good to share. The story is set in the early 1900s and focuses on a woman who wins a camera in a lottery and finds new found joy in life in using it. It showed at both the Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals and received rather positive reviews from Variety and LA Weekly amongst others, as you can see in the trailer. So if you're interested, check it out below.

Ralph Fiennes Directing Adaptation of Shakespeare's Coriolanus
Voldemort is going to direct a movie! Oscar nominated actor Ralph Fiennes, who plays Voldemort in the Harry Potter movies, will make his directorial debut with an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Roman tragedy Coriolanus. In addition to directing, Fiennes will also play the title role of the proud but contemptuous soldier Coriolanus spurred on by his mother to run for the Roman Senate, which ultimately leads to his downfall. Vanessa Redgrave is in talks to play the part of Coriolanus' mother Volumnia. Fiennes has already scouted for locations in East Europe and is currently in negotiations with financiers.

Must Watch: Red Band Trailer for Observe and Report!
We've been waiting for this one! Observe and Report is the follow-up film from up-and-coming filmmaker Jody Hill, who broke out with The Foot Fist Way a few years ago. Seth Rogen stars as Forest Ridge Mall's head of security and things get a little out of hand when a flasher invades. Warner Brothers has officially debuted the red band trailer for Observe and Report and it's as hilarious as we were expecting. Screw those other movies like Land of the Lost, this is the big 2009 comedy that we're actually looking forward to seeing! In fact, this looks so damn good, that dare I say it could be a new comedy classic?!
