2009 Independent Spirit Awards Winners Announced
The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that they won't necessarily be receiving at the Oscars tomorrow. The winners were announced earlier tonight at the ceremony held on the beach in Santa Monica. Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler took home the most awards, a total of three, for Best Cinematography, Best Actor, and Best Feature. The rest of the winners couldn't be more deserving and I expect I'll end up liking these winners more than those that are chosen tomorrow night at the Oscars.

Sing-Along with Land of the Lost's Dr. Rick Marshall!
MTV just aired their second episode of a really bad TV show called "Spoilers" recently which literally does just as the title says - it spoils movies in an attempt to make fans even more excited. This episode featured all kinds of shenanigans, none of which was really that exciting or worth mentioning, because who wants to watch poorly edited MTV-style featurettes that lack a single second of new footage. Oddly enough, the best clip was from Land of the Lost, which featured Rick Marshall, played by Will Ferrell, singing a song with his banjo in the jungle. Why not enjoy a little Saturday evening entertainment courtesy of Will Ferrell?

The Dark Knight Officially Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide
Just days before the Oscars, The Dark Knight has finally crossed the $1 billion box office mark worldwide. To Warner Brothers, this may be even more exciting than winning any golden statues, because it is now only the fourth movie in history to ever make that much money. Titanic, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest are the only other three movies to have achieved such a tremendous success. It took a combined 31 weeks, including a January re-release, for Christopher Nolan's comic book movie to make $533 million in the US and $567 million worldwide.

Paramount Debuts a Shiny New Star Trek Logo - Really?
Yesterday night, Paramount debuted a new logo for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek. Although I'm a bit confused. A logo makes headlines? Well, take a good look, because that one above is the new one. It's basically the same iconic font turned metallic instead of white, and with a few new lens flare streaks. That's it? Maybe they're just trying to be very sensitive towards the fans and debut something like this in an official capacity rather than hide it in a trailer, but I guess I'm just baffled that a "slightly improved" logo is worthy of being breaking news. But who knows, maybe this is exciting for the right fans? Do you like the new logo?

Battlestar Galactica Spinning-Up for the Silver Screen
Fridays only mean one thing 'round these parts - Battlestar Galactica. But this nugget of news doesn't concern the acclaimed SciFi Channel series, instead, Universal is planning to bring the Human/Cylon battle to theatres with original creator Glen A. Larson. This adaptation would be solely based on the first BSG series that ran in the late 1970s and would follow none of the continuity established by Ronald D. Moore's recent reboot. For the uninitiated, the Battlestar Galactica canon follows a desperate fleet of human survivors on the run from the Cylons, a cybernetic race that destroyed their colonial homeworld.

Zack Snyder Directing Sucker Punch Next for 2011
So what does the visionary director who makes something incredible out of what was unfilmmable go on to do next? How about a movie described as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns" called Sucker Punch? We've heard about this before - Zack Snyder announced it way back in 2007 during all the 300 hype. It's set in the 1950's and follows a girl who while in a mental institution imagines an alternative reality to hide from the pain, and in that world, begins planning her escape. It's a bit more complicated, obviously, and was co-written by Snyder himself and Steve Shibuya, and will definitely be Snyder's next project.

Must Watch: Judd Apatow's Funny People Trailer
Universal has debuted a very long, very funny, and very touching trailer for Judd Apatow's Funny People. This is Judd Apatow's third feature film and it looks pretty incredible, I'd say, and I'm already going to say that it's one of my most anticipated summer releases based off of this trailer. Not only does it have a very wonderful side of humanity that you rarely see captured in trailers, but I laughed louder than I have at any other actual comedy this year. I really think Judd Apatow has another gem just waiting to hit theaters. I just wonder if this is his pinnacle, his masterpiece, or if he'll still go on to directing something even better?

Legendary Pictures Preparing for Superman Unleashed?
We've been hearing a lot of Superman buzz recently, and although the news about the Wachowski Brothers directing a trilogy was debunked, we have some real news to report today. A reader on SlashFilm sent over a screenshot from the Legendary Pictures website that contained a listing for a project called Superman Unleashed and a basic plot synopsis that describes it as a sequel to Superman Returns. While I was initially kind of unsure, SlashFilm did confirm with another source that this is indeed a working title and that Warner Brothers is still hearing pitches from different writers, meaning it's not official just yet.

John Williams Scoring Spielberg's Adventures of Tintin
We've reached a new era of journalism where composer announcements get as much exposure as casting. We all know Steven Spielberg is hard at work on his next project, The Adventures of Tintin, but it doesn't have a lot of buzz yet. But one bit of news that may change that is that the legendary John Williams will be scoring the movie. Besides the most recent Indiana Jones movie, Williams hasn't scored anything big (or new) since Munich in 2005. Although he is basically Spielberg's personal composer, so this shouldn't be too big of a shocker. It's just an interesting realization regarding the scope of the project.

More Interesting Terminator Viral - Skynet Security System
Things are getting very interesting with the Terminator Salvation viral. You all probably remember the Skynet Research website that launched last week, with a bunch of weird information about prototype Skynet models and robotic research. I'm a big viral marketing nut, so when things start to get interesting and cool things start to happen, I take notice and its makes me excited. And the recent buzz regarding this viral is that Skynet has launched a Skynet Security System which is linked in with a whole bunch of comic book stores around the US. There is an intro video to be watched and more details that have popped up.

Exclusive: Is Neal McDonough Marvel's Captain America?!
Yesterday afternoon I interviewed with one of my favorite actors, Neal McDonough, who plays M. Bison in the upcoming Street Fighter movie. As the interview was wrapping up, I asked him about what he's doing next, as part of a question about what he looks for in scripts. And at the last second, he said that, "I think it's time for me to go back to playing some of the really good guys who can get the job done, like Captain America, maybe." I immediately asked him if that was a hint, and his response was even more confusing. It's been on my mind since the interview, and I just had to open this discussion up to all of our readers.

Worth Watching - Feb 20: Alex Rivera's Sleep Dealer Trailer
Remember that trippy Matrix-like poster I put up a few days ago for a film called Sleep Dealer? Well, here's the official trailer, courtesy of IGN, if you've been waiting to see it. Sleep Dealer debuted at Sundance last year and is a low-budget sci-fi story set in Mexico. This trailer actually does a great job of summing up the entire story, so I don't need to go into it myself, I'll just let you watch this. Though don't forget that I really hated this. Out of all the films I saw at Sundance that year, this was one of my very least favorite films. That said, a few of you may like this trailer enough to give it a shot anyway. So take a look!
