Sam Raimi and Jonathan Demme Join SXSW Line-Up!
March 3, 2009
by Alex Billington
The SXSW Film Festival announced two last minute additions to its 2009 line-up. Sam Raimi's return to classic horror, Drag Me to Hell, will debut as a work-in-progress, since Universal is still putting it out in theaters in May. Additionally, Jonathan Demme's new Neil Young performance film, Neil Young Trunk Show, will premiere on the last day of the fest. "Both Sam Raimi and Jonathan Demme add tremendous weight to our program," said SXSW producer Janet Pierson, "and we are beyond privileged to screen films that are not only highly anticipated by fans and industry alike, but are truly inline with SXSW sensibilities."
Who knew that the sensibilities of SXSW included campy horror films? Either way, it's exciting to see Sam Raimi get some extra love down in Austin, as I've seen an early cut of Drag Me to Hell and it's pretty damn good. As for Demme's film, I'm not at all a fan of all these big directors creating music films about their favorite bands, but that's just me. I'm probably going to skip Neil Young Trunk Show, but might catch Drag Me to Hell again if I can make it to the midnight screening on March 15th. You can see the previously announced full line-up over here. The SXSW Film Festival runs March 13th to 21st in Austin, Texas.

Of course it'd be in the SXSW sensibilities. People in Austin love those types of movies. Every once in a while, Alamo Drafthouse does quote-a-longs for Evil Dead 2 and other movies like it. Hell, Fantastic Fest is a genre festival mostly made up of horror films. SXSW is very Austin and Austin loves it's horror films.

Raimi's skill is at making great horror flicks which is a tough genre to be good at. Step away from Spiderman Raimi and get back to the horror. Cant wait for this one.
