X-Men 2 Writer Dan Harris Adapting Dante's Inferno
March 17, 2009
by Alex Billington
So you know that Dante's Inferno video game that EA is producing? We showed you the trailer for the game about a month ago. Well, Universal has finally hired screenwriter Dan Harris to work on a screenplay or their live-action adaptation. Harris' past credits include Urban Chaos Theory, X-Men 2, Imaginary Heroes, Superman Returns, and Until Death most recently. We don't know much about the plot besides the very basics because, well, the game doesn't hit shelves until early 2010. So that's about all we know, but I guess it's good they have a solid screenwriter with some experience assigned to this.
A lot of people are using Superman Returns in their headline for this news, but I chose X-Men 2. Why? Because that gives a bit more clout to Harris, as opposed to Superman Returns, which is a film a lot of people think Bryan Singer screwed up. Plus, on both films, Harris is one of three writers who actually contributed to the script and story, so we don't know exactly how much involvement he had. Either way, I still think it's good to have him on board, because he is very capable of writing some strong action set pieces. And that should mean we'll get at least an entertaining adaptation of Dante's Inferno in the end.

This is going to be awful. The book is a phenomenal discovery of sin, redemption, and love, and possibly (at least on a technical level) the greatest poem ever written.
But it is in no way an action flick. I'm going to die watching this in theaters if its anything like the video game trailer. and then ill die more when movie going teenagers think they're awesome because they've seen this movie, and wont be able to appreciate the book because its a challenging read.
why hollywood, just why?

Fincher already kind of explored this with se7en.. so it's nothing terribly new but it will be interesting to see how it's developed.
